VELMA IVA THORINGTON (nee CASWELL) June 12, 1942 - September 6, 2009 The family sadly announces the passing of Velma Iva Thorington on Sunday, September 6, 2009. Remaining to forever cherish Vel's memory are her four children and their families. Son Barry (Karen), grandchildren Dr. Krystal Thorington (Daniel Robinson), Nikolas and their mother Lori Byrd; step grandchildren Zach and Colin Dubbin; daughter Christine; son Trevor (Marilyn), granddaughters Robyn and Cara; Teresa (Dave) Pirrie, grandchildren Corey and Vanessa. Her mother Dora Caswell, sisters Ruth (Harold) Oschner and Shirley (Duane) Nelson, brothers Chuck (June) Caswell, Clint (Denise) Caswell and Doug (Barb) Caswell; brother-in-law Garnet Howie, and large extended family. Vel was predeceased by her loving husband Robert in 1998; sister Marylin in April and father Asa in 1980. Mom was born in Kingston, Ontario and moved to Killarney, Manitoba as a young child. Eventually her family moved to Winnipeg. There she met the love of her life, Bob. Mom and Dad were young and the family grew fast. They moved into St. James and lived in the same neighbourhood until Mom's passing. Mom had many friends that spanned most of her life. She was the heart of the neighbourhood and people often gathered at her home. Mom and Dad took many trips with the kids but really enjoyed travelling later to Europe, Las Vegas, California and many trips to Florida. Velma's funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in the Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive. We would like to thank Mom's caregivers, especially daughter Teresa and granddaughter Vanessa. Special thanks to the neighbours and longtime friends Del and Sandy who kept such a close eye on Mom. We would like to express our appreciation for Chris from Palliative Care and the CancerCare staff at the Grace Hospital. Thank you also to all of our family and friends who kept Mom in their thoughts and prayers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB or WHRA Palliative Care Program, 4 - 650 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1E2.
