Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRAE HENRY TALLIN On September 8, 2009 Rae Henry Tallin passed away, with family at his side. Rae is survived by his loving wife Linda; his children: Tom (Tracy and Laura); Candace; Margot (Chris and Casey Bigelow); Andrew; Melinda (Glen Mitchell); nephews: Andy (Maria) Tallin, Jeff (Shelley) Tallin; Chris Tallin; nieces: Elizabeth (Rob Brownstone), Ashley (Jeff Cass); Alexandra (Peter Lyon), brother-in-law Scott Wright (Sonya), and many grand nieces and nephews, and second cousins. Rae was born in Winnipeg on April 18, 1927, the son of Pete and Olive Tallin, and lived in the Wolseley area on Evanson. He attended Laura Secord and Gordon Bell Schools, where he enjoyed sports, music and academics. He was a member of the YMCA from a young age, working summers at Camp Stevens. He received his Arts and Law Degrees from the University of Manitoba, where he also participated in a large number of extra-curricular events including basketball and football, and pursued his love of music by playing in local swing bands. He was called to the Bar in 1954, and married Linda, daughter of Kirk and Tom Wright, a year later. After two years of private practice, he began his 28-year career with the Manitoba government in the office of the Legislative Counsel under Gerry Rutherford, becoming Legislative Counsel himself several years later. During that time Rae participated in many annual law conferences, often as commissioner at the federal Uniformity Conferences. He felt very proud to have been Canadian delegate to The Hague International Law Conference and leader of the Canadian delegation for several international conferences (two in The Hague, one in Rome and one in Bucharest). Rae and Linda moved to the area of Old England on River Road in 1964, where they lived for many happy years raising their children. Their home and their cottage at Minaki were always open to family and friends, and Rae and Linda made everyone welcome. In 1984, Rae moved to Ottawa to join the federal Department of Justice, and was shortly after co-opted to the Department of Finance where for the next twelve years he participated in the construction of federal legislation till his retirement in 1997. In 1986 they moved to a home in Blakeney, Ontario, outside of Ottawa. In 1997, he and Linda moved back to Winnipeg where he continued to do the work he loved in short term contracts with the City of Winnipeg and the federal and provincial governments. Music was always an integral part of Rae's life, as his extensive record collection attests. After retirement, Rae was able to return to his love of playing live music, playing clarinet, and alto, tenor and baritone saxophones in several bands including the South Glen Orchestra, the Legion Band, the German Club Brass Band, among many others, right up to playing two shows a day at this year's Folklorama. Rae loved and was loved by his large family and his many friends, and was respected by his peers. His humour and great laugh will be missed by everyone who knew him. Graveside interment at Little Britain United Church, 5879 Main St., St. Andrews, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 12th, followed by a reception in the church hall.
