JON THORDARSON Sadly, after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer, Jon passed away peacefully with his beloved wife and soulmate Janice by his side at the Grace Hospital on March 13, 2010. Also left to cherish Jon's memory are his children, Kryn, Karl (Daina), Elin, Lara (Tim) and Erik; his sister Signy; and brothers, Erik and Karl. Jon was predeceased by his parents, Doreen and David Thordarson. Jon's distinguished career as a photo-journalist began at the Winnipeg Tribune, continued to The Hamilton Spectator and The Winnipeg Sun, culminating as the Design and Graphics editor with the Winnipeg Free Press. Jon was extremely proud of his Icelandic heritage and he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream to visit the family homestead in Iceland. Winter travels to the Dominican Republic and Cuba were new discoveries for Jon. Jon's interests and knowledge seemed to know no bounds. He became a master of anything he undertook. He was our go to man for answers. We will miss his kindness, generosity, patience and courage. He was our hero. Jon's happiest times were spent at the cottage in Ponemah, whether he was reading on the deck, walking his Labradors down the beach, or cycling to Gimli. Only good days and great days was his motto. Jon lived every day the best he could and for as long as he could. His passion for living inspired all of us. Jon was always grateful for the skilled and excellent support received from all the doctors and nurses involved in his care. The generosity and support shown by the staff of the Winnipeg Free Press has been beyond measure to Jon and his family. In lieu of flowers, Jon would encourage you to give to the Winnipeg Humane Society, CancerCare Manitoba or go for a bike ride. A celebration of Jon's life will take place at a later date.
