GARNET TAIT 1920 - 2010 It is with much sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Garnet on Sunday, September 19, 2010 at the age of 90. Garnet was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Rita Tait, brothers Norman, Cecil (Joy), and Ken; stepmother Eleanor, and stepsister Ida. Remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Ruby, of 63 years, son Garry, daughters, Carol Horvath, and Linda (Ray) Penny; grandchildren Lisa (Mike) Taylor, Vickie (Rudy) Fulawka, Ken (Christine) Horvath, Warren (Barbara) Flannery, Gail (Jason) Houghton, great-grandchildren Sean, Matt, Eva, Danielle, Erica, Emma, Gillian, Brooklynn, Alex, Regan, Braeden, and sister-in-law, Lynn Tait, also numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Garnet was born in Winnipeg on May 29, 1920. His early years were spent in the Children's Home of Winnipeg, and later at the Knowles School for boys. In 1937 he went to work on a farm at Teulon, MB. In 1940, at the age of 20, Garnet joined the RCASC. Shortly there after he was deployed overseas where he spent the next four and one half years serving in England and North West Europe. He returned to Winnipeg in September 1945 where he met and married Ruby on November 16, 1946. He worked at several jobs before he joined Canada Post in Winnipeg. There he spent 23 years as a letter carrier until his retirement. In 1980 he and Ruby retired to Gimli where he became very active with the Gimli New Horizons Club. He loved 5-pin bowling, darts, carpet bowling, and bingo; and was an avid reader. Many happy hours were spent playing cards and board games with his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. For many years it was his dream to return to Holland, which he helped liberate in 1945. In 1995 his dream came true when he visited Holland with his wife to help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their freedom. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the compassionate care provided to Garnet by the Nursing Staff at Gimli Community Health Centre and Eriksdale Hospital. A special thanks goes to Dr. S. V. Patel, Garnet's physician for many years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg. Pastor Harv Janzen of Bayview Evangelical Free Church, Gimli, will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or the charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn 885-9715
