HENRY (HANK) OLECKA March 25, 1921 - November 29, 2011 It is with a profound sense of loss that we announce the passing of Hank Olecka on November 29, 2011. Hank was predeceased by his wife Gladys in August, 2005. He leaves behind to mourn, his stepdaughters Kathy Bales (Chris), Laura Rachiele (Dan) and Joanne DiBiase, also his five grandchildren Krista Paulson (Kristjan), Richard Pohl, John, Joseph and Michael DiBiase, his sister Margaret and family of Beausejour, sister Winnie of Winnipeg, and brother Bill of Ontario. He will also be sadly missed by all of his friends and comrades at The General Sir Sam Steele Legion. Hank was born on March 25, 1921 in St. Andrews, Manitoba. Hank moved to Winnipeg and worked in construction before working for Winnipeg Brass (Canadian Bronze) where he worked for over 35 years prior to retiring in 1987 to spend time with his loving wife. He met his wife Gladys in the late 1970s and they were married in 1982. He is a lifetime member of the Legion and was on the Executive at The General Sir Sam Steele Legion (Sick and Visiting). He touched many lives by visiting his comrades and friends whenever they were in hospital and they were always glad to see him. He was elected Honorary President at Sir General Sam Steele Legion for the years 2010 and 2011. Hank enjoyed dancing and was a frequent participant of the Wednesday afternoon dinner / dance program at the Legion. He very much enjoyed playing crib with his fellow members at the Legion, and was also an avid bowler and dart player. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Vi Bakrac. Through her care and compassion towards Hank, Vi exemplified the true meaning of friendship. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
