PETER HELGE ROSS CHILDS Peter H. R. Childs slipped away quietly during the afternoon of December 2, 2011. He was known as Peter to his family and friends, Dad to his two sons, Poppa to his grandchildren, Great-Poppa to one great-grandson and Timbit-Poppa to his second great-grandson. He was predeceased by the love of his life, wife Joyce in 1994, infant granddaughter Holly, three brothers, one sister, his parents, parents-in-law and extended families. His colourful personality and determined character will be fondly remembered by the family he has left behind, including his oldest son Brent (wife Myrna) with their children Riley (Kimberly), Dan (wife Tammy and sons Carter and Ethan), Trevor, Paul and Brett (Jessica); and his youngest son Ken (wife Michelle) with their children Carrie (Jeff), Kendra (husband Kyle), Richard, Bradley and Austin. Peter was born on November 5, 1934 and despite having lived in Toronto, Lee River and Winnipeg, he always considered himself a Saskatchewan-boy-at-heart with his roots in Nipawin and Regina. He was well known to everyone for his infamous and interesting never-ending stories of adventures and for always being happy to meet at Tim Horton's for coffee. His sons and grandsons will forever recall his basic teachings in life -- oil changes every 3000 miles, the importance of clean vehicles and good tires, and what to look for in a motorhome. Poppa was energetic, outgoing and friendly and had a great sense of pride for the accomplishments in his life. He had been employed over the years in land surveying, freezer warehouse management, paper production, managing the Co-op gas station (Henderson Highway), and school maintenance. His best friends were his family and some of the most enjoyable times in his life were when he was fishing, camping with campfires at night and hotcakes with bacon for breakfast, hunting, visiting at Tomahawk Resort and Longbow Lake in Ontario, going on road trips, always being game for any adventure, and spending hours and hours on the lawn tractor cutting grass at Lee River and at his son's home. Peter often expressed his thankfulness to his son Brent for all the loving care he provided daily during the last difficult months of his life. It enabled him to stay in his own home until his last two weeks. Peter and his family have also been very appreciative of the individuals who extended their care and support to him during his illness, including Dr. Lipschitz, Jenalyn and Nurse Margaret at Health Sciences Centre, Dr. McFlickier, special Home Care Nurse Richard, the staff of the St. Boniface Palliative Care Unit, friend Dolores, others who visited with him, and those who kept track of his progress. A graveside service was held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at Brookside Cemetery. We can now take comfort in knowing he can rest in peace and without pain. Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I will always remember how observant Peter was in looking after the neighbours. My husband was gone for some reason and and I had left the garage light on. Peter phoned to say that he noticed the garage light was on. He was concerned that we were spending money on power that we did not need to. I also left the light on in my car one time and again Peter phoned to let us know. He was our "turn the light off' angel. Prior to adopting our old cat, our cat kept visiting us from another neighbour's place. We came home one day to find the cat had liked Peter so much she had climbed up the ladder he was on at the side of his house and was sitting on his head. We subsequently took over the care of the cat for the next 14 years. Peter and Joyce were good neighbours. He will be looking after loved ones from heaven. - Posted by: Maureen Williams (former neighbour in Lee River Lac du Bonnet) on: Feb 08, 2012
