JOHN MATIAS Peacefully on December 5, 2011 at Grace Hospital, our beloved father and grandfather passed away at the age of 85. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Helga (Bob), Robert (Maggie), Linda (Humberto); and granddaughters, Britni and Isabella. He was predeceased by his wife Eugenie in 1972 and his longtime companion Grace in 2004. Dad lived a very quiet, private life at his home for 51 years. His greatest pleasure was puttering in his garden, watching Wheel of Fortune and simply spending time with his children and grandchildren. Our family would like to thank Dr. April Boyd of Health Sciences Centre and the ICU team and staff, Dr. Francisco Cordova and staff of St. Boniface Hospital, and Dr. Pinton, Dr. Maiti and Unit 4S staff of Grace Hospital. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 9, 10:30 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's memory to a charity of choice. 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dear Papa John, It’s Isabella! How are you? I haven’t stopped thinking about you, and know you’re in a better place. We are halfway through 2020, and I still miss you so much. I remember when you used to come over and bring goodies, a zip-loc bag full of change and tell funny stories about those “crackers” (grackle birds) that were always cawing up a storm in your garden! Our garden has been very successful this year, and it reminds me of the garden you had. ROWS of tomatoes and cucumbers, beans, peppers and onions are overflowing our garden boxes, even our cottage has onions growing. I remember you even taught me to play the green onion kazoo! :) We wish you could enjoy our lake with us, but I know you’re there in spirit. Your hydrangea and cherry bushes have turned into trees, and OH MY, you wouldn’t believe their size now. We’ve taken good care of your peony flowers, too. All of your plants are alive and well! After travelling to Europe in 2018, it gave me the inspiration to be adventurous like you were. We almost went to your home country! I’m an artist now, and gaining traction with my drawings and music. I remember you used to draw, and you were VERY good at free-hand. Your creativity is still alive; in the garden and in artistry! This is my first ever entry, and writing to you feels so healing. Even if you can’t see this now, let the universe carry this message to your spirit! Fly high, Papa! I love you so much, you will never be forgotten. Love, your “Lila girl”, Isabella ❤️ - Posted by: Isabella Matias Da Silva (Granddaughter) on: Jul 28, 2020
