ETHEL MAY BELFRY May 17, 1922 - December 12, 2011 Peacefully, with her family by her side, Ethel passed into the loving arms of Angels in her ascent to Heaven Monday, December 12, at the age of 89 years. The beauty of her smile and warmth of her heart will forever live with her loving family: Kim, John and Michelle; precious grandchildren Brett and Carley, as well as Sarah, who Amma embraced as one of her own; cherished sisters- in-law Dorothy Paulson and Ada Gray; beloved extended family members and many treasured friends. The strength of her faith assured Ethel with calming peace that she would be welcomed into the arms of those who passed before her: husband Harry; parents Carrie and Oscar; siblings Alma, Bud, Verna, Lorna, Irene, and June. Ethel was born in Charleswood May 17, 1922. She was an exemplary student at Chapman Elementary and Charleswood School, followed by secretarial training at Success Business College. Enriched by their Icelandic Heritage, the strong bonds within the Paulson family were guided with a strong work ethic, valued education and deep appreciation of nature. She became a very talented seamstress and enjoyed crocheting. She loved to draw and used various mediumswatercolor, oil paints and pastelsto create her beautiful pictures. Her creative abilities grew into boundless gifts in calligraphy, mosaics and paper toll. Ethel met Harry, the love of her life, while working with Sun-Life Insurance, and they married February 14, 1948. They shared the depth of their love through 55 years, and extended their love to all. She enjoyed her many years working with Shelmerdine Nurseries. Ethel Worked with Harry, and together built a successful business called Har-Bel Insurance. Ethel felt honored to live through childhood and adult years in Charleswood in the house that her father and brother built. Their two children, John Kim, were blessed to be raised in this loving and welcoming home. They cherished family time together in their home on Lynbrook Drive and the cottage at Twin Beaches Lake. Her special joys were her grandchildren, Brett and Carley. Amma loved to hear about Brett's fishing and building adventures, and Carley's singing and dancing. They were truly the lights of her life. Amma and Kim would have won the world record for watching videos of Brett and Carley over and over again! She loved nature, birds and wildlife, and with Brett, Carley, and Kim at Christmas, left cornflakes outside for Cornflakes their pet deer. She is also remembered as a great cook, and all the family members couldn't wait to have Amma's famous roast beef dinner! Ethel enjoyed many trips with Harry upon his retirement. They had great times with friends in Florida, and visiting friends and relatives in Victoria. Ethel valued her time with the Charleswood Lions Senior's Club. She had a special relationship with all of her friends there. Her quality of life was greatly enhanced through the community of care shared among all at Lindenwood Terrace. Ethel was a wonderful support to everyone. Her smile and kindness won the hearts of all she knew. She truly embodied the virtue of kindness as reflected in Mother Teresa's quote: Kind words are easy to speak, but their echoes are endless . A heartfelt Thank you to: Dr. Elkin and Trish from the Charleswood Medical Centre, and Carey and Katie from Leila Pharmacy, for providing excellent medical care and support. We would also like to thank all the Personnel and Health Care Workers from Lindenwood Manor. If we could sit across the porch from God, we would thank Him for lending us our dear Mother, Amma, Sister, Auntie, Cousin and Friend. A celebration of Ethel's life will be held Monday, December 19, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ethel's memory to: Breast CancerCare Manitoba, St. Boniface Hospital, 409 Tache Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6; Humane Society, 45 Hearst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3; or Winnipeg Harvest, 1085 Winnipeg Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0S2.
