EMILY FUNK Emily Elsie Funk (nee Kustra), age 78, of Winnipeg passed away peacefully on December 17, 2011 in the presence of family, after a valiant fight with cancer. Emily was born in Dauphin, Manitoba on February 27, 1933 to Martin and Mary Kustra of Keld, Manitoba. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Anne and brother Bill. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Frank; daughters Lorie (Kelly Martel) and Sheila (Brian Pomrenke); sons Ken (Yvonne) and Tom (Tatiana Kowalchuk); her grandchildren Derek, Hailey, Jillian, Emilee and Katharine; her brother Pete Kustra; sisters Shirley Peters and Nellie Petkau; their families, and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her early years were spent in Keld on the family farm. As a teenager she moved to Winnipeg where she worked at Perth's. She met her husband Frank in Winnipeg and in 1958 they married in Dauphin. They moved to the Grunthal area where they farmed and started their family. They also lived in Steinbach and Kelowna, British Columbia, where they ran a restaurant. They moved back to Winnipeg before retiring to Transcona. She was always a loving and kind person, devoted wife and incredible mom and grandma. She enjoyed gardening and was a wonderful cook. Her last weeks were a testament to her courage, faith and desire for life. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. We would like to thank the nurses, staff and volunteers at Jocelyn House Hospice as they did so much to make the last months of her life both comfortable and dignified. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jocelyn House Hospice, 177 Eggerton Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2M 2W7. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Dear Ken (and Yvonne), We are sorry for your loss. We only got to know your Mom, Emily, for a little while before she moved away from Transcona. She had such a gentle and kind nature, with a beautiful smile. She really enjoyed learning about her Creator and the wonderful Paradise He promises to restore to this Earth. We look forward to getting to know her better then, when there will be no more sickness or death. Your Family is in our thoughts and prayers. - Posted by: John & Cindy Ozuk ((new friends / North Transcona Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses)) on: Feb 03, 2012

  • My parents (Jake & Susan Braun) were neighbours and friends to Frank & Emily Funk when they lived in the Spencer south area south of Grunthal. I was their babysitter & spent many good times at their house.
