ELEANOR DOUGLAS WISWELL The angels welcomed Norie after a lengthy illness on December 20, 2011. Norie will be sadly missed by her sons, Andy (Nancy) and Jim (Ellen) and her daughter Mary (Gregg) and her six special grandchildren Kimberly (Shaun), Fraser, Ainsley (Riley), Graham, Adam (Jessica) and Janine as well as her two new great-grandsons, Anders and Haddon. Norie was predeceased by her husband Gordon (Wis) in 2000. Norie was born the daughter of Andrew and Margaret Douglas in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on 1922 and decided to further her education at Dalhousie University in Halifax where she earned her Bachelor of Commerce in 1943. There she met her husband and life long partner, Gordon (Wis), and they enjoyed 50 wonderful years together. She put her degree to work for eight years in different accounting positions in both Boston and Toronto and then moved to Winnipeg in 1955. Norie chose to stay home to raise her three children. She was devoted to her family and they were her priority. They appreciated the fact she was always there for them. Her love, support and sage advice benefited them all as they grew up and faced life's challenges. She had a yen for life long learning and the house was full of art books, travel brochures and she was always reading. With her children at university, she decided to join them and graduated with her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the U of Manitoba in 1979. She shared her organizational and leadership skills over the years by volunteering at the Winnipeg Art Gallery both on the Board and also guiding the school tours. She was active with the Junior League in Toronto and Winnipeg and got her exercise by curling and playing golf. She and Wis enjoyed traveling and spending their summers at Victoria Beach and their winters in Bermuda. Norie enjoyed her weekly Bridge with the PNB girls every Friday. Norie's struggle with Parkinson's disease is over. She faced this serious affliction and loss of independence with grace and never complained. The family wishes to thank with gratitude the compassionate staff on 2 North at Calvary Place. They were very attentive to Norie's needs and helped us all through the final stages. Special thanks to so many friends and family for the love and support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a donation may be made in Norie's memory to the Wiswell Fund at the Winnipeg Foundation 1350-1 Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X3. It would be a gift that keeps on giving. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to honour the life of Norie will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church, at 168 Wilton Street on Thursday, December 22 at 5:00 p.m. Thomson Funeral Home 669 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C oX4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com
