CYRIL HENRY HOWARD Cyril Henry Howard died suddenly after a mercifully brief illness on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, at the Grace Hospital with his family by his side. He faced his illness with strength, dignity and courage. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Irma, and their three children, Cathryn Nykvist, Alison King (John) and David (Carla). His six grandchildren (Abigail, Ryan, Kadie, Taylor, Kaitlyn and Matthew) gave him his joie de vie. He leaves two sisters, Edith Bamlett (George) and Dorothy Grudeski, as well as his brother, William (Genny). He will be missed by many relatives and countless friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Percy and Florence, and brother-in-law, Leonard Grudeski. Cy was born on June 27, 1934, in Kenora, Ontario. When he was five, the family moved to Riding Mountain, Manitoba and he completed high school in Kelwood. Cy attended the Provincial Normal School and taught for four years before continuing his studies where he achieved his Bachelor of Science (Civil Engineering) and later his Masters in Structural Engineering and his Masters in Education. He was dedicated to his profession through the various positions he served at Red River Community College, South Winnipeg Technical College and with the Provincial Government. He encouraged many students to pursue their dreams. Cy had work assignments during his professional career in Egypt and Libya and he was fascinated by the construction of the pyramids. After his formal retirement in 1996, Cy incorporated his own businessCyclone Technical Serviceswhere he marketed, sold, and distributed an energy-efficient parking lot controller. Cy was devoted to his family and tried to instill the values of hard work and dedication to others. Cy was a very practical person who believed that he could fix almost anything. He spent countless hours refurbishing the family cottage and home. He had a passion for gardening and truly appreciated the beauty of nature. He thoroughly enjoyed opportunities to share his knowledge with others. He was a lifelong sport enthusiast. His volunteer positions were many and varied. He loved to play board and card games, especially bridge. There were family holidays each year when the children were growing up and the intention of these was to teach them about their country and beyond. Cy and Irma visited Great Britain, the Baltic States, St. Petersburg, Cuba, China, Australia and New Zealand. They also enjoyed cruises on the Danube and to Alaska and the Yukon. Part of two winters were enjoyed in Victoria. Cy would like to be remembered as a friend to all who knew him. The family would like to thank all those who assisted in any way throughout this difficult time. May God bless you all. A memorial service will be held on December 28, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Charleswood United Church. • Dear Mrs. Howard, Alison, Cathy, David and your families, I was very saddened to learn that Mr. Howard had died. I will always remember the kind and gentle way. He had a strong and reassuring presence; a chance meeting with him in an ice cream shop where he was buying ice cream cones for the grandchildren left me with a feeling that everything in the world was going to be alright. I pray that your memories, deep faith in God and the love of many friends bring you comfort during this sad time. Very truly yours, Janet Monks - Posted by: Janet Monks (friend) on: Jan 29, 2012

  • Words don't seem to express how deeply saddened we are for you Irma and your family. We will dearly miss Cy. So many good memories of a wonderful friend and neighbor. Living next door to someone who always had time for us and was full of excellent advice on any topic was a blessing that we will always treasure. Anything from tips for our son on how to swing a bat, or advice on how to fix anything. Even relational, social, and spiritual thoughts were not off limit topics with Cy. He was open, warm, and receiving to anyone. Cy lived by the motto that people are always more important than things. He was more than a neighbor. He was a friend, a father-like figure to us, and a grandfather-like figure to our sons. Cy has truly graced our lives as he has so many others. His legacy is his beautiful family whom we are privileged to know. - Posted by: Maureen Peddle (neighbor and friend) on: Dec 27, 2011
