JOYCE NEWMAN (nee PARKER) 1918 - 2011 Peacefully, on Friday, December 30, 2011, Joyce Aisne Newman passed away at Riverview Health Centre after a life well lived. Joyce is survived by her daughters, Shirley Newman, Pat Hodgert (John), and Kathy Helbrecht (Bob) and by her grandchildren, Kate Fennell (Tim), Paul Hodgert (Ashli) and Jane Helbrecht, all of Winnipeg. In addition, she is survived by her nephews and niece, Roger Newman (Jan) of Gimli, Don Newman (Shannon) of Ottawa, and Carol Guyot (Rick) of Pierre fonds. Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Lewis Newman, and by her parents, Susan and Louis Parker, as well as all of her in-laws. Joyce was born in Regina on April 21, 1918, and moved to Winnipeg at the age of two, where her family took up residence in Norwood. Joyce attended Tache School and Norwood Collegiate, graduating in 1935. After time spent at Wesley College and Success Business School, she was employed by the Winnipeg Electric Company, where, as war was about to break out, she met her future husband, Lew. Joyce and Lew were married near the end of the war, September of 1944. When Lew returned from service overseas, they built their own home in Norwood and began their lives together. Joyce's focus, from that time forward, was on supporting her husband, raising her three daughters, and enriching her community. Joyce was a long time member of Norwood United Church (now St. Mary's Road United Church), being active in the UCW and working with the special ladies of Unit 1 for over 50 years. Over the years, Joyce canvassed for many charities and volunteered for several years at the St. Boniface Hospital Gift Shop. Joyce and Lew were members of the St.Boniface, Norwood, and St.Vital Kinsmen and Kinettes and Joyce served as Kinette president in 1953 to 1954. Joyce and Lew were proud members of their bridge club which met for over 40 years. She also played duplicate bridge with a group of Norwood ladies for many years. Joyce and Lew loved their home and community and never strayed very far from either; they were blessed with wonderful neighbours and friends, who were an important part of their lives. Joyce will be remembered for her unconditional love and support for her family, her steadfast loyalty to her friends, and the gentle grace with which she lived her life. Joyce's family would like to thank the residents and staff of The Rosewood who enhanced the quality of her life for over eight years. We would also like to thank the staff of Riverview (3C) for their care and compassion throughout the last year. In keeping with Joyce's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road. The Reverend Alice Szemok officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
