VERA GWENDOLYNE ATTWOOD (nee HINAM) It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Vera Gwendolyne Attwood, age 98, on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Harry, her brother Morris Hinam and sister-in-law Isabel Hinam. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Sandy) Will, grandsons Blair (Terri) and Glenn (Shona), and great-grandchildren Allannah, Braedy, Kadeyn, Zackery, Jennifer and Tyler. She is also survived by nieces Katherine Halliday and Irene Hinam, and nephew William Hinam. Vera was born to William and Frances (Friend) Hinam, in Bristol, England, October 21, 1913. The family immigrated to Canada in 1923 first to Brandon and then to Winnipeg. Vera attended General Wolfe School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. Following graduation she was employed by Picardy's in the candy department and developed a lifelong dislike of maraschino cherries. Vera worked in the Glove Department at Eaton's for many years, giving it up when Harry retired in the early 1970s. She met Harry Attwood and they were married in September, 1938. Their daughter Patricia was born the following summer. They lived in Geraldton, ON and Atikokan, MB where Harry worked as a miner. They moved to Winnipeg where Harry worked for Weston's Bakery as a Driver Salesman, assisted by his horse who knew the route better than Harry and on weekends by the additional help of his daughter. The family spent summer holidays and weekends at the cottage in the Grand Beach Campsite. When the C.N.R. sold the Grand Beach site to the Province, they purchased a cottage in Grand Marais. The weekend trip home from the Beach involved a stop at Weston's to load Harry's truck for the next morning's deliveries. Vera enjoyed her swimming and spent many years at Sherbrook Pool with the Women's Amateur Swimming Club. Vera was involved with the Orioles Community Club for many years and worked diligently at the Canteen and weekly Bingos and enjoyed bingo at the Beach and in later years on short trips to casinos in North Dakota and Minnesota. She and Harry were ardent bowlers with the Weston's League and golfers, particularly after retirement. They spent winters in Paso del Sol, Brownsville, Texas and made many friends. A special thanks to the staff on the Third Floor of Oakview Manor for their sympathetic and kind care of Vera. A celebration of Vera's life will be held at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Dear Family, While I did not know Vera personally, she sounds like a beloved woman who lived a fulfilling and active life. I sincerely offer my condolences to all of you. My wonderful grandmother, Rosalie Arcand (Helliwell), affectionately known as Rose passed away on 01/13/12 at the age of 90. Grammy Rose and I were close and on a few occasions she spoke to me about a lost family connection to a woman named Vera who was born in England, moved to Canada as a child, and was approximately 8 years older. It sounds like Rose and Vera may have tried to stay in touch through a few letters many years ago but communication and travel were not quite as easy at that time. Grammy and I searched for Vera this past summer but could not find any leads on the Internet. With the unexpected passing of my Grammy earlier this week, I decided to look again and it has brought me to now sending this note. If you believe there is a lost family connection between these two wonderful ladies, it would be so appreciated if you could please let us know. There is some peace and happiness knowing that their close deaths may have reunited them.
