Hal and Merelyn were our next door neighbours in Port Coquitlam back in the late '60's. They, along with Larry and Ninna Sherwood who lived directly across the street from them were wonderful friends in those early days of our married life and Gail and I enjoyed their relaxed and friendly manner often on Eastern Drive. My wife Gail, also is in the grip of Alzheimer's and I my heart goes out to Hal's family. I had not realized that Merelyn had passed and can only hope that they are happy together after what sounds like a long struggle. Hal was a great talent in sports journalism, his many awards bear that out. Thinking of you at this time, Kerry Turner - Posted by: Kerry Turner (Former neighbour and friend) on: Jan 21, 2012

I met Hal when my husband George and Hal started at the Winnipeg Free Press. We moved to Calgary and Hal always called when in town for a sporting event and a meal, and then when Siggy came to work at the Albertan and George at the Herald, we had wonderful meals and happy hours together. We reconnected in Mesa, AZ several years ago and once again sports was always the hot topic. Now he and George can discuss sports forever - they were addicted. Hal was a wonderful person. My heart aches for family and Vi- be comforted knowing my thoughts are with you during this difficult time. hugs, Ollie Bilych, Calgary - Posted by: Ollie Bilych (Friend) on: Jan 21, 2012

A dear friend who will be missed in many ways. Fond memories to cherish. Travelling and visiting with Hal and his dear friend Vi was great fun. Hal's great wit brought a lot of laughter and enjoyment. A man of many talents, compassion and caring for others was the HAL that I was privileged to have known. Miss you always Love;your friend; Irene - Posted by: Irene Friesen (close friend) on: Jan 21, 2012

Hal was Uncle Bud to me. I have lots of special memories of our family gatherings in Winnipeg, as well as in Vancouver, when I spent two months there back in the 70's. Bud's joie de vivre was contagious; when he was around fun and laughter ensued. Will miss you, Uncle Bud! Thoughts and prayers are with all my cousins at this difficult time.
