MARY ZUK May 20, 1910 - January 20, 2012 Well Mary succeeded! She wanted to exceed her mother's age and she did by five years. She was a very young 101 year old with incredible spirit and strength. Those around her were amazed at her strength of character and determination. Even though she had physical challenges, her mind was amazingly sharp and she maintained a positive outlook. Mary was born in Hamerlik, Manitoba, and attended Leeland School. She married Nicholas (Nick) Zuk in 1936, and she gave birth to their only child William (Bill). The family moved to Winnipeg in the early 1940s where Mary worked as a cleaning lady. One of her clients offered her a sewing position at Manitoba Upholstery where she worked until the 1960s. She later worked along with her husband at Sparkle Car Wash which he built and co-owned with his brother John and one other partner. Her son Billy was her pride and joy and she would always worry about him. She always appreciated the care her daughter-in-law, Carole provided to her. She was so proud of her family and their achievements. She especially loved when she became a great-grandmother and she would call her great-grandchildren her great-ones!!! She loved working in her garden, was an avid BINGO player, and cooking her Ukrainian dishes which her family loved to eat. Mary loved her sports right from her youth. She especially liked to watch baseball, tennis, and hockey on television. She travelled to places around Canada and the United States. Mary and Nick especially enjoyed their many trips to Hawaii. Mary was predeceased by her husband Nick in 1993, parents Karilo and Katherine Zuk (nee Ponyk), her brother Harry and her half-sisters Anna Ledochowski and Pearl Zigel. Left to cherish her memory are her son Bill (Carole), grandchildren Susan (James Rogowsky), Warren (Loreto), Philip, Mark (Lori Smelski) and great-grandchildren Nicole, Erin, Jack, Sawyer and Anjali. The family would like to thank all staff on 2A at Holy Family Home. They made her feel loved and the care they provided was exceptional. She loved every staff member and we are sincerely appreciative of their excellent care of her. In lieu of flowers, if you so choose, donations can be sent to Holy Family Home, CancerCare Manitoba, Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education or to a charity of your choice. A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Glen Eden Funeral Home with Fr. B. Wasyliw officiating. Pallbearers will be Mark and Warren Zuk, James and Nicole Rogowsky, Phillip Popiel and Wayne Pestrak. Honourary pallbearers will be Philip, Jack and Sawyer Zuk. Very saddened to hear of Mary's passing. My mom and dad, I know shared so many good times in Regina and so many good talks over the phone. I hold a special place in my heart for Mary because she taught me to hoop embroider when I was very young living in Regina. We will miss her and I will miss the updates from all her phone calls. we will remember.(Dara Oosterlee) Joyce and Walter Lychak and Family - Posted by: Joyce, Walter Lychak and family (Family) on: Nov 13, 2015

I remember her well ... my best friend's mom. A warm, loving, generous, positive person. Living life the way it should be lived ... simply, embracing family and friends, being an asset in every environment. .....I'll bet you think about her a lot, Bill, Carole ... - Posted by: rick fence (family friend) on: Jun 06, 2014

I met Mary at Tuesday night BINGO, and enjoyed her company for a few years. She could play 15 cards and still tell you that you missed a number on your own card. She had a great sense of humour and I miss talking to her, even though there were more than 64 years difference betweeen us. - Posted by: Tracy (bingo friend) on: Apr 05, 2012
