Dear Evelyn, Doug Jr, Megan, Andrew & Alex, Nick & I were shocked and deeply saddened at the news of Doug's passing. I honestly don't have a single tear left in me. These last few days have been beyond difficult and my old man was one of a kind. The service today was beautiful and for those who were there or have watched it online, you know how special he was to all of us. I just copied all of your posts down, and over the coming days, months or maybe years I will eventually read them. I thank everyone for sharing their stories... My father will forever live inside my siblings and I... RIP BIG Doug you will be so dearly missed... - Posted by: Doug MacIver Jr. (Son) on: Jan 31, 2012

Alex, so sorry to hear about your dad. I remember him at many of your basketball games. He would always take the time to talk to me after a game and I remember how generous he was when he took the entire basketball team to the U of W breakfast. My deepest condolences to you and your family. - Posted by: Donna Faryon (Alex's Former Basketball Coach, Garden City Collegiate) on: Jan 30, 2012

I was blessed with Doug’s friendship through high school at Windsor Park Collegiate, on the gridiron with the St. Vital Colts and St. Boniface Broncs, and beyond. Doug was a big man with an even bigger personality. He could make an impression, but before he left his mark he made sure you felt his warm heart. We had many adventures in our youth. I treasure those memories. Rest in peace dear friend. - Posted by: Bernie Kruchak (Friend) on: Jan 30, 2012

Evelyn, Douglas, Andrew and Alexandria: It is hard to believe that almost 21 years ago the MacIver family entered my life by introducing me to a man we all love dearly, my husband! You all hold such a special place in our hearts and I am deeply saddened by your loss. Doug was an incredible man and I will cherish all the memories I am fortunate to have shared with him; holiday dinners, breakdancing children, birthday parties, hockey games, Bloomfield Trail but my most memorable one of Doug will always be our first Willowdale Dodge staff xmas party! I am sorry I could not be there in person but am with you all in spirit. We will miss Doug dearly and you are all in my thoughts and prayers. xoxo Sandra - Posted by: Sandra, Hilary, Amy & Luke Buckberrough (Family friend) on: Jan 30, 2012

To the entire MacIver family..... Our deepest condolences. We were so shocked and saddened to hear of Doug's passing. You're such a strong family, we know you will love and support each other in this tragic time. Even tho we've all grown, and gone our separate ways, those childhood family relationships are still so close to our hearts. Virgie and Tunney were so distraught for you all. Be strong for each other, you are in our thoughts and prayers. On behalf of the whole Hovorka family. Lori Hovorka - Posted by: lori hovorka (family friend) on: Jan 30, 2012

When I needed 3 vans for the reps at Brathwaites I flew to Toronto and met with him. He got me a unbelievable deal and took zero commission for himself. We had a great visit and got together in Winnipeg at the Red Top a few years later.. too sad. - Posted by: Berton and Anna Cade (classmates) on: Jan 30, 2012

I can still remember the look of awe on my kid's faces when Doug took off his Grey Cup ring and handed it to them so they could try it on. This was at one of Doug and Evelyn's open houses in King City, an annual event sure to brighten a dreary January. To Evelyn and the children, please accept our deepest sympathies on the passing of Doug. He was a good man and will be missed. RIP sir. My condolences to the MacIver family on their loss. It was a shock when I heard the news. I'll always remember Doug as the larger-than-life giant who made me laugh when we were growing up in St. James. God be with you in your sorrow. - Posted by: Warren Gottfried (Childhood friend) on: Jan 30, 2012

Doug was a gentle giant of a man with an even bigger heart to match. While I was working for him at Willowdale Dodge he always made sure that the kids of the employees there received a very special Christmas including an elaborate party and gifts even when business was bad. One year our Santa failed to show and Doug took on the role and was the best one ever. Rest in Peace. You will be missed. - Posted by: Kevin Harris (Business Associate) on: Jan 30, 2012

Mary, Evelyn, Doug Jr, Meagan, Andrew, Alex, your son/husband/father, was larger than life itself. He was a man who (as Bucky said to me tonight) believed in second chances, were it not for him I would not be here today. He taught me the true value of life, loyalty and friendship. His work ethic was second to none. I will forever miss his 5 phone calls a day to ask, Well? What are we delivering Today? His loyalty to those around him cannot truly be expressed in words, but they were by his deeds. He could be mad as heck at ya and a half hour later call you to say "ya know I Love you". His smile and presence lit up the room and everyone who knew him would say when he left, God I Love that guy. To Ian, his brother, I love you as well Sir. You two were so much alike, even if you lost out on the height meter lol, you possess all of the great things your brother had as well including an enormous heart. To all of the sisters and brothers, I am truly fortunate to have met and know you all. Finally, Doug, I thank you for pestering my butt to come back and work WITH you once again. One thing about you, when you went after something! You got it..lol. Your torch has been passed and we all will carry it proudly in your name. I cannot say goodbye, but I can say farewell until we meet again. Your friend, your brother from another mother, affectionaly Crack of Noon. Doug always made me laugh. He could orchestrate a good joke on someone, and take one as well. I sat next to him in the locker room during the '84 Grey Cup season. He always arrived with a menu of new jokes, which he was a master at telling; a good way to start the day, or any day for that matter. A good ball player and a good man. I shall always remember him fondly. - Posted by: Vernon J. Pahl (former teamate and friend) on: Jan 29, 2012

Doug and i met at training camp, the first year he tried out with the Bombers. He didn't make the team that year, but came back the next year better prepared than any rookie I'd ever seen. He had a motor that wouldn't stop, and an attitude that would never let him quit, no matter the situation. He was like a younger brother to me, and training with him in the off season kept me pushing the envelope during my career. He loved his family beyond bounds, and spent hours travelling to watch them play hockey, basketball, or whatever sport they loved. Ev was the turning point in his life, and having her by his side made everything he did worthwhile and possible. She is his rock, and as he went through great times and down times, was always by his side, never wavering, or losing faith in their ability to rise above, and persevere. Working alongside his sons, and family was dream come true for him, and the MacIver's clan, working together made an unbeatable team. When one passes, the question asked and answered is, did I make a difference; to Bucky, myself, his team mates, his friends and family, knowing him, sharing fun, laughter, and tears, made our lives better. He was big in my life. - Posted by: Chuck Liebrock (team mate, mentor, friend) on: Jan 29, 2012

Dear Evelyn, Doug & Megan, Andrew, Alex and extended MacIver Family: we are heartbroken on the loss of our wonderful, loving friend Doug, our gentle giant. His laughter, smile & personality filled a room. Our girls loved going out with him, he kept them entertained, especially Lauren who still laughs at his "happy Gilmore" moves when they were golfing. "Finky" will miss his "big brother" Doug's phone calls, golf games & dinners. We will cherish all the great & fun times we had with Doug & all of you. Our hearts are breaking for Mary, Evelyn the entire MacIver family. All of the members of the Gillis family have wonderful memories of Doug, particularly family get togethers at Christmas when the parents sang Scottish songs and the kids went downstairs to listen to the Stones, always to reunite for Mary's wonderful cooking! He saved me at sixteen, started my career at eighteen, watched me walk down the aisle, was there when my kids were born. You gave me tools to move forward you are a huge man and it has nothing to do with your size, you are a champion and it has nothing to do with football. I love you Bucky - Posted by: Michael Buckberrough (Family business friend) on: Jan 29, 2012

I've known Doug since we were kids in Windsor Park, through to when he played football with the Bisons, and the Bombers where I was an Athletic Therapist. Doug has always been a friend through the years, always willing to help. Having Alex as one of our athletes at the University of Winnipeg extended our relationship for which I am very glad. Doug like his Father, Jack and Brother-in-law David all were Freemasons and members of Millennioum Lodge N0.182 and all three were salesmen that I met at Midway Chrysler. A great many years have passed since that original Winakwa football team. Growing up in Niakwa Park produced a lot of amazing school mates, especially Doug. While he looked like he could have been a rock, there was this big heart that came out in acts of kindness throughout the years. I had the pleasure of doing business with Doug during the car dealership days, and I could see his love of family surrounded his desk, pictures in frames. I was so happy he added me as a friend to the social network, and that we enjoyed some reunions in the past 5 years. We are sad, yet grateful to be once again amongst his fans as we celebrate his life . - Posted by: Laurie Gydé (friend and neighbor, classmate) on: Jan 28, 2012

Being a man of small stature my friend Ian's younger brother Doug, managed to overwhelm me with both his size and personality. When I golfed with him as his partner in South Carolina our golf cart was somewhat unbalanced----Robert I found Dougie to be such a sweet, sensitive man. On a Chrysler dealer trip in Japan in the 80s, I remember so well dancing with him when he wore two kimonos. He was light on his feet and so much fun. He was a lovely man and I am sure he will be missed by his family and friends. ---Vibeke - Posted by: Robert & Vibeke Ball & Family (Friends) on: Jan 28, 2012

Coach Maciver coached our team The St James Jr Rods in 1990, the last year of Jr Football in Manitoba. I will always remember a trip to Thunder Bay we had that year. We were losing by a touchdown at halftime. The game was poorly reffed that day. Coach came in the dressing room, took off his massive Grey Cup ring and punched the wall as hard as he could. He proceeded to give us a tearful speech about the game of football and told us how proud he was to coach us that year. It should be noted Coach Maciver was asked by Norm Rauhaus that year to "come help out". It quickly became his team, we all loved that man like he was our father. I will miss him as I know the rest of that 1990 Rods team will. Rest in peace Big Daddy, a job well done! Namaste Ron Burley - Posted by: Ron Burley (Football) on: Jan 27, 2012
