NEVA YVONNE NICHOLLS 1928 - 2012 Peacefully in her sleep, with husband Glenn at her side, Neva passed away on January 24, 2012 at the age of 84. Neva was born in Waskada, Manitoba on January 12, 1928, daughter of Jack and Leita (née Ballard) George. As the daughter of a school inspector, Neva and family lived in Shoal Lake, Killarney and Deloraine. Following high school in Deloraine, Neva went on to attend the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1948 with a B.SC. (H.Ec.). After graduation, she worked with the 4-H Program in southern Ontario before working with the YWCA in Winnipeg. In 1953, Neva moved to Flin Flon where she met Glenn while employed as a home economics teacher. Glenn and Neva were married in 1955 in Deloraine. Shortly thereafter they left for England and both taught school in London for a year. Returning to Flin Flon, Neva took on the role of full time mother to David (1958), Peter (1959) and Jane (1961). Moving to Winnipeg in 1963, Neva continued to be a wonderful stay at home mom. She returned to university in 1970 to complete her studies in the Faculty of Education. Neva resumed her teaching career in Winnipeg School Division, then in River East School Division where she taught at Miles Macdonell Collegiate until she retired. Neva was a long time advocate for peace and justice. She was a founding member of Educators for Social Responsibility, a long serving member of Immanuel United Church's Outreach Committee and a proud member of the New Democratic Party. She received the Canada 125 Medal in 1992 in recognition of her efforts. Neva, Glenn and family have many wonderful memories of time spent at the family cottage at Austin Lake in Northwestern Ontario. Neva loved to swim, entertain friends at Happy Hour and watch the kids ski, tube and fish. She was known to go on the occasional tube ride herself! Neva will be forever remembered and sadly missed by husband and partner of 56 years, Glenn, her sons David and Peter (daughter-in-law Diane and grandchildren Brett and Cassidy), daughter Jane (son-in-law Paul and grandson Donald), brother Jack George and his wife Madge, sister-in-law Isobel Doull and husband Jim, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her many friends including the Three Sheets to the Wind curling group and her Immanuel community. Cremation has already taken place. A memorial service will be held at Immanuel United Church, 755 Golspie Avenue, Winnipeg, on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immanuel United Church (Outreach) or to a charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • I was thinking about who inspired and encouraged me when I was in school to be an advocate for social justice and peace, as I am preparing for a presentation to teachers about doing the same with their own students, and I thought of Glenn and Neva Nicholls. Thus, I Googled them to get some background information and discovered, sadly, that Neva had passed away. My condolences and continued gratitude and admiration. • I just found this on the internet, Glenn, after missing the original WFP announcement. I always found Neva to be so warm and direct wih an ever ready smile. I loved reading of her many commitments, some of which I was unaware. I felt a real "kindred spirit" attachment as our Anne of Green Gables would have said. Glenn, David, Peter, Jane and family - my sincere condolences. - Posted by: Muriel Smith (friend) on: Feb 06, 2012

Warren tells me that her service was exceptional with many stories and happy memories conveyed by your family. She was a most positive force in my early years and I just wanted to express my deepest sympathy to all of your family. Brian Thompson - Posted by: Brian Thompson (friend) on: Jan 29, 2012
