He will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren Shana (John, LJay, Jamy), Chris (Bolette, Jonathon), Jamie (Chandra, Alison, Eric), Andrea (Ken, Tyler, Justin), Greg (Val), Tara (Derek, Skyler, Charmaine), Sasha (Greg, Evan) (their mother, Charlotte Craig), Michael Baker (Carole,Taraka, Tamy) and Cindy (Perry, Cameron, Kaleb ). He also leaves sisters-in-law Winnie Bergner, Alice Hutcheson, Florence Wotton and many nieces and nephews. Waiting to greet him are his nephew Jack who he raised, parents Robert and Paula along with stepmother Gertrude and his siblings Rudy (Bertha) Bergner, Mary (Reinhard) Schultz, Walter (Louise) Bergner, Kurt Bergner, Johanna Baker and Freida (Ernie) Sedola. He was also predeceased by his in-laws Roy and Ethel Westfall, Marge (Vic) Simon, Wilf Wotton and several nieces, nephews and dear friends. Art was born on October 29, 1920 in Camper, Manitoba, the youngest of the family. He married Una Westfall in 1942 and they set out for a life on Vancouver Island. This did not suit their liking so they came back to the Camper area. Marlene was born in November 1943. A few years later the Island beckoned again and, while there, Lenore was born in November 1948. Again Manitoba called and they returned to farm in the Goulborne District. Jack joined the family in 1949, Bud was born in June 1952 followed by Debbi in September 1954. During the years in Goulborne, Art was a founding member of the Interlake Cattlemen Association and with his long-time friend Herman Dory and others, cutting trees and hauling to town for railing. Years later he supervised the building of the current stockyards. Art volunteered many hours in the building of the arena and community hall. During this time he also coached the Wildcats fastball team enjoying great times with great friends. In 1971, Art and Una moved to Ashern and Bud took over the farm. Art may have moved to town but went to the farm almost every day. He continued to work at the stockyards and spent many winters caretaking and running the canteen at the arena. He could bring almost any kid to tears with his bark , then turn his back and have a good chuckle about it. He loved to walk, watch sports, do jigsaw puzzles and play bingo. He was quietly proud of the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Ashern Centennial Hall on Monday, January 30, 2012 with Pastor Bill Watson officiating. Viewing will take place one hour prior to the service at the hall. Service will conclude at the hall with cremation to follow and a burial to be held at a later date at Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Allan Budge, Dave Townsend, Larry Russell, Keith Halldorson, Chummy Zacharias and Harvey Bergner. Honorary pallbearer will be Elmer Lutz. In lieu of flowers donations may be given to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild c/o Box 721, Ashern, MB, R0C0E0 or Prostate Cancer Canada, 2 Lombard Street, 3rd Floor, Toronto, ON M5C 1M1. The family thanks the Home Care staff, doctors, nurses and staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital for their care and compassion. Thanks also to John and staff of Arnason Funeral Home for your kindness and guidance at this time. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593

My condolences to the family. I do remember going out to the farm as a child and had a wonderful time. Only wish the family was closer so I could see them more often. - Posted by: Judi Gray (cousin-in-law) on: Jan 29, 2012

Although no words of sympathy can ease the loss you bear, may you find some comfort in knowing others care. My thoughts and prayers are with you Auntie Una and also with all your children, and their families. Love Irma - Posted by: Irma Erhart (niece) on: Jan 29, 2012

I have memories of Art as I was accepted in the Ashern Area as a teenager, not being from the area. As mentioned, Art showed a grumpy nature. But also true that after he gave you his grump tone he would laugh to himself. He was a friend. He will be missed. - Posted by: Ralph & Shirley Sinclair (Friend Of The Bergner Family) on: Jan 28, 2012

I have recollections of Mr Bergner as a neighbour when I was young. On really cold mornings, he would give his children, Lenore & Buddy, a ride to Goulbourne school with a horse(s) & sleigh. If we were out on the road, also heading for school, he would pick us up. I remember their pretty, albeit spirited, mare named Nellie. Yes, when around Mr Bergner, I also felt I had better "toe the line"! We appreciated them as neighbours and remember getting many home perms done by Una - thanks Una: I'm sure I didn't thank you then. I wish you all comfort in your memories. May the Lord carry you through this as you deal with your loss. - Posted by: Margaret Wahl (Former neighbour) on: Jan 28, 2012

I have many fond memories of Art beginning in those early years when Marlene, Jack and I became friends. But I think of him most fondly after he moved to Ashern and began caretaking the arena. He took the job most personally and even set a trap for someone who was confiscating products out of the concession (and successfully "captured" the individual!) Later, when I ran my B&B, Art would walk by each day just to check my yard, my flowers, and I'm sure, me, to make certain all was OK! If you walked down Main Street, he would be sitting at the window assembling the puzzles he loved to work on but he'd always respond to a wave, so you just knew he was also keeping an eye on the town to make sure all was going well! Farewell, dear friend! - Posted by: Marliene Lutz (Friend) on: Jan 27, 2012
