Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE POETKER October 24, 1927 - January 23, 2012 George was born to Peter and Katerina of Steinbach, Manitoba and was one of seven children; Rudy, John, Danny, Irvin, Leonard and sister Herta. Peter and Katerina emigrated to Canada in 1924 from Russia. After learning his trade in Steinbach as a very young man, George moved to Winnipeg and was employed as a machinist with Pritchard Engineering, rising to a position of manager. Later he joined Dynamic Machine and served as president for a number of years. In 1984 he realized his dream of owning his own company and opened Manisteel Industrial Machine which operated until his retirement in 2004. George met and married his wife of 58 years Corinne (nee Cann) on June 5th, 1954. They had two children, Dalene and George Bruce. He thrived on the challenges his chosen field presented and was well known and respected by his customers in the business world to whom he always gave his best. George was an avid reader with a great interest in history, politics and world affairs. He loved to go to the cottage on weekends, and found relaxation in afternoons spent on the beach as well as gardening and taking pride in his lawn and plantings. He loved to watch his grandsons play hockey and together George and Corinne never missed a hockey, baseball or lacrosse game, as well as the boy's school concerts and science fairs. He particularly enjoyed picking up the boys and taking them out for a special adventure with a finale of hot chocolate and donuts. In summer months their adventures began early on Sunday mornings with a large black Labrador Retriever who couldn't wait for Grandpa to get up and take them all in the truck to fetch the morning newspaper. Left to cherish the memories are his wife, children, grandchildren, sister-in-law Betty and family of Toronto and sister-in-law Jamie and family of Vancouver, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Our beloved husband, father and grandfather was laid to rest at Chapel Lawn and the family would like to thank the wonderful, caring people of Deer Lodge Centre. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Fund or to Deer Lodge Centre. Your light, your love, your laughter We shall cherish forever after. You were our rock. My husband Alex and I worked at Pritchard Engineering the time when George was there. We were friends with both George and Corrine and their cottage was close to ours. I edited a monthly newsletter and George never missed reading a copy. I really liked George - he was such a very nice man. Alex and George were good friends for many years. Alex passed away in 2008. My deepest sympathy to Corrine and family. Shirley Fast - Posted by: Shirley Fast (Friend and editor of PECO Patter) on: May 08, 2015
