JOHN BEVERLEY (BEV) JONES 1932 - 2012 Sadly, we announce the death of Bev Jones after a mercifully short battle with cancer. Bev was the youngest son of Clem and Stella (Wood) Jones, both from Manitoba pioneering families, and kid brother to Eleanor and Ted Percival and Bob and Ruth (Essery) Jones. He was the beloved husband, for almost 55 years, to Jan and a loving, and loved, Dad to Glyn Jones and Colleen (Eccleston), Cathie Bowerman and her husband, Brian, and Dave and Kathy (Isfeld) Jones. His seven grandchildren were his joy and, although they sometimes had to receive his criticism, they knew how he loved them all dearly. Glyn, Amy and Gavin Bowerman, Caeli and Sian Weaver-Jones, Athan and Keelan Jones will miss their Papa but remember him fondly. Bev loved the Prairies, in all seasons (no wimping out and going south in winter!) He loved horses, especially the big draft horses, and rarely missed the Threshermen's Reunion in Austin, Manitoba. This past summer, he was able to take Sian to see the Budweiser team in Fort Collins, Colorado. Other interests were Motor Cross, Speedway and any programs on TV about cars -although he would be the first to tell you he was no mechanic! As a person concerned about his community, Bev gave his time, through the years, to his chosen church, St. Mary's Anglican in Charleswood, as Sunday School Superintendent. When Youth Soccer began in Charleswood in the 1960s, Bev volunteered as a coach and had immense pleasure working with his team The Gunners - to this day, he thought of those players as part of our extended family. He volunteered in various ways with hockey in the area, managing teams and later serving on the Ranger Board for several years. In later years he became the scourge of referees and umpires, who may now do their jobs without challenge! Bev's working life, as a salesman, was varied and interesting but he enjoyed both colleagues and customers during his years at Sears, Polo Park. His retirement job at Investors Group put him in touch with the guys and gals in the Mailroom and he got a big kick out of their stories of weekend shenanigans and their lives outside of the work-place. Thanks kids , you kept him young! Bev died gently and with no pain. We are so grateful to the doctors, specialists, nurses, technicians and aides at St. Boniface Hospital, who took us through these last few days with kindness and concern. From the incredibly busy Emergency Department, the quiet and calm of 5 East, to the peace and personal attention in the ICU, we were surrounded by caring staff. Thank you all so very much. Our thanks also to Bev's personal Physician, Dr. Mark Elkin of the Charleswood Clinic, who looked after him so well for many years. Bev wanted no funeral service and so we will honour this request. Instead, we will meet with family and friends, some time in the summer, to exchange our memories and celebrate a life well lived. I've request no flowers but donations to any of Bev's interests, which you may share, would be appreciated: St. Mary's Anglican Church Sunday School; St. Boniface Research Foundation; JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation); or any Youth Sports Associations. • Our condolences to you Dave, Kathy and your family for your loss. I met Bev just after starting to work here at IG. He was always quick to smile. Let me know if you'd like a piper for your summer celebration / remembrance. - Posted by: Troy & Shelley Blair (old work buddy) on: Feb 07, 2012

  • So sorry to hear of your loss in such close conjunction with the loss of our mother Gerry. Janice, I was the one that drove Mom & Dad up to Neepawa for the interment of Aunt Florence's ashes. I have often had to drive pass Neepawa for work reasons and have on occaision stopped at the cemetery to "see" Uncle Bill and Aunt Florence. So know that they are being "visited" even if infrequently. Condolences to all of your family on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. - Posted by: Cathy Savage (Family Friend) on: Feb 02, 2012

  • I knew Bev from playing soccer in the 1970s. He and his wife, Jan, were a big part of the Charleswood soccer scene. We always addressed them as Mr. and Mrs. Jones. He had a big heart and a warm smile. Always optimistic and saw the good in people. He made a difference in my family. Flashbacks to those days come easy and clear. - Posted by: Martin () on: Feb 01, 2012

  • We are both so sorry to hear about Bev. I still remember having to tell people that Bev was the husband and Jan was the wife. We loved running into both of you and seeing how everything was going. Even when Bev came to complain about hockey at WMHA. He will really be missed. He was such a friendly, talkative outgoing person. - Posted by: Barbara and Terry Fee (Hockey Friends) on: Jan 29, 2012
