GEORGE SERBIN December 10, 1928 - January 28, 2012 George passed away peacefully at home in his sleep. He will be lovingly remembered and forever missed by his daughter, Rita-Lynn and her husband Steve Holborn; his son Bill and his wife Kelli, and his grandchildren Melissa (Michael Weinstein), Chelsea, Zachary, and Nicholas. George was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Rita, in 2003, and his youngest son Allan, in 1985. He was profoundly saddened by the loss of his son and he greatly missed his wife, the love of his life. He also was predeceased by his parents, William and Pauline Serbin, and by his brother, Fred Serbin. His sister Alice Shastal, many nieces, nephews, and his cousin, Gloria DeVries, will remember sharing special celebrations with him. George also will be missed by his many friends and neighbours with whom he enjoyed regular visits and telephone conversations. He will be fondly remembered as a gracious, gentle, and caring man with a warm smile and a loving heart. George had a zest for life, was a true handyman, and always had a new project on the go. He enjoyed spending time at the cottage and travelling with his family in the winter. George and his wife Rita shared a love of family, music, dancing, and Chinese food. He also loved sharing stories with his grandchildren, about his childhood, his work adventures, and his trips with Rita to Europe and Mexico. George worked for the Hudson Bay Company for 39 years. He also owned and maintained several residential properties. He was a very respected and kind landlord and developed friendships with many of his tenants. George had a tremendous work ethic which he instilled in his children and grandchildren. The Serbin Family is grateful for the excellent medical and home care George received. Special thanks to Dr. Perez, nurse Angela and pharmacist Rasha. Our appreciation also is extended to Cielito Benasa for her care of George in recent months. A funeral service will take place on Friday, February 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. Rev. Fr. Gene Maximiuk will preside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to the Riverview Health Centre Foundation, Day Hospital Program or to St. Ivan's Suchavsky Cathedral. 586-8044

  • I only knew George for a short time but I won't forget that smile. He was a kind, peaceful man with a good sense of humor. Remember the good times with him as I am sure there are many. - Posted by: Kara (Rehab attendant at Riverview Day Hospital.) on: Feb 01, 2012

  • My dad worked with George Serbin at the HBC warehouse on Berry St. for many years. He was one of my dad's favourite co-workers.I remember him and Rita coming to our home when I was a little girl. George attended my dad's funeral when he passed in 2004 and I remember how much that meant to my mom. Years later I connected with George and Rita again when I visited them as a palliative nurse for Rita. I am sorry for the family's loss but I know he is happy to be with his beloved Rita. How he loved and missed her when she passed! My sympathies go out to the family..... from Sharon LaBine - Posted by: Sharon LaBine (Sopinick) (friend) on: Jan 31, 2012
