MARY SOLONYKA (nee NYKOLIATION) It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Mary, at age 91, at the Health Sciences Centre on January 29, 2012 with her family by her side. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her son, Edward (Patricia) of Sudbury; grandchildren, Tanya (Paul) of Toronto and Matthew (Kira) of St. Albert; great-grandson, Oliver of Toronto, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Katherine (1933); husband, Matt (1966); father, Paul (1968); daughter, Patsy (1973); brother, Fred (1987), and sister, Nellie (1993). Mary was born in Seech, Manitoba on March 1, 1920 where she was also raised and educated. She came to Winnipeg in 1942 where she had resided ever since. During her early days in Winnipeg, she worked at several positions prior to her marriage to Matt Solonyka on January 19, 1946. She stayed home to raise her family and returned to the work place in 1966 where she worked at Eaton's Bake Shop and then at Wonder Whip until her retirement in 1985. For many years Mary enjoyed spending time at the family cottage on Eleanor Lake in the Whiteshell, especially fishing off the dock in the early morning and playing canasta in the evening. Until recently, Mary maintained her daily journal and searched the local paper for interesting articles to add to her scrapbook collection. She was a long time member of the Holy Trinity Metropolitan Cathedral and the Lesia Ukrainka Branch of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Canada. She was a Life Member of St. Andrew's College in Winnipeg. The family wishes to express their thanks to the health care providers in Unit GD5, Health Services Centre for taking exceptional care of Mary during her stay. Funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Metropolitan Cathedral, 1175 Main St. at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 4. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to your favourite charity. In Our Hearts Forever 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I well remember Aunt Mary. We stayed at her home a few times & I remember always feeling WELCOME. Unfortunately, I hadn't seen her in many years, but I always loved receiving Christmas cards from her with notes about what was going on with her written neatly inside of them. Never anything negative. She wasn't one to complain. Always happy things. It was a delight to know her & although I'll miss her, I'm happy she's at peace with our Lord. My sympathy to Ed, Pat & family. - Posted by: Tracy Hurlbert (cousin's granddaughter) on: Feb 07, 2012

  • So sorry to hear of Mary's passing. I will miss her as I have known her for a long time but she is with the Lord now and will have no more suffering. Rest in peace Mary until we meet again. • This very special woman has been an inspiration to me and an even greater support through many of my life experiences. I will always remember her kindness, generosity and unwaivering faith. I will never forget her words of strength and comfort following the loss of my parents and Aunt Julie. Her regular phone calls were a joy to receive and I have great memories of our visits and car rides. When I recall the many gifts I've received in my life, those blessings include Mary. I trust that her amazing gentle spirit will live on for all of eternity. I will miss her very much. With love always. Debby - Posted by: Debby Kaniuga (Cousin) on: Feb 02, 2012

  • We will forever hold the memories of Aunt Mary in our hearts. She was more aware and dialed in to current events than most people half her age. My fond memories as a child (and even as an adult) was of Aunt Mary's house and her wonderful things in it. This was relived all over again for me when my 4 year old daughter Claire, on our last visit, stood fascinated at all the taxidermic birds she had. Very special memories, very special Aunt. Will miss her. Our thoughts are with you Ted and family. Brent, Tanya, Claire and Ava Nykoliation - Posted by: Brent and Tanya Nykoliation (Great nephew) on: Feb 02, 2012

  • Unfortunately Cathy and I are a long way from home vacationing in Costa Rica. We offer our sincerest condolences to my cousin Ed and family. I remember Aunt Mary as one of the strongest and bravest women I have known. She was always kind and caring no matter her own condition. I also remember many happy times at the cottage with my parents, especially when all the aunts and uncles and cousins would somehow find room inside and out and a hot summer weekend. Yet Aunty Mary always made us feel welcome. - Posted by: Robert Bamburak (Nephew) on: Feb 02, 2012
