WALTER SCHETTLER 1940 - 2012 It is with sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of Walter William Schettler, also known as Uncle Joey . Walter was born on February 24, 1940 in Grass River, Manitoba and passed away on February 7, 2012 in Winnipeg with his children by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Walter was predeceased by his parents, mother Sophie Schettler (Preisentanz) and father William Schettler. Leaving to mourn are his four children and their spouses: Nancy (Chad), Debbie (Billy), Cathy (Darryl), Greg (Kim); Carol Schettler; brother Arnold (Mae); sisters Violet, Helen (Don) and Ruth (Ross), and cousins, nephews and nieces. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Braden and Darby, Akira and Takao, Evrytt, Nicholas, and Sydney, Syngeon, Madison and Kiley. Walter spent his childhood on the family farm until he was 15 when his family moved to Plumas, Manitoba. After graduation he moved to Winnipeg to further his studies at the Tuxedo Teachers College. He began his teaching career at Hebron School in Souris, and continued his career in the River East School Division for 25 years. He spent his last two years of teaching, experiencing the outdoors and culture, in Split Lake. Walter enjoyed traveling. His children have fond childhood memories of trips to Plumas, Gladstone, St. Catharines, Ontario and British Columbia. Also, camping and spending hours at the beach, at Grand Beach and Blue Lake. One of their favourite summer destinations was visiting their cousins in Rainy River, Ontario. Dad loved the beauty of the outdoors and shared that with us as we were growing up. Walter had many hobbies throughout the years including: reading historical fiction and non-fiction, sports, listening to a variety of musical genres, playing cribbage, and collecting antiques, stamps, and coins. He belonged to the Manitoba Genealogical Society. His grandchildren have wonderful memories of visits with Grandpa Walter . Dad will always be remembered by many for his beautiful smile, contagious laugh, and his unconditional love and acceptance. A special thank you to the staff at the North Battleford Mental Health Centre, the Selkirk Mental Health Centre and the staff at GD2 at the Health Sciences Centre. Thank you for making a difference with the love and care you put into your work. Memorial Service will be held at Glen Eden, 4477 Main Street, on Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, 100-4 Fort Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 1C4.
