JOAN PATRICIA SLATER (nee ANDERTON) April 27, 1923 - February 17, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Joan Slater, aged 88 years, on Friday, February 17, 2012 at St. Boniface General Hospital with her family at her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Fred, of 67 years, son Bryan, daughter Susan, daughter-in-law Heather (Frank Fredrickson), three grandchildren Robyn, Samantha and Cory, and great-grandson Dario. She will also be remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, England and Australia. Joan was predeceased by her beloved eldest son Earle and grandson Jonathan-Casey, her parents Joseph and Lillian Anderton, and her four brothers and two sisters. Joan was a first generation Canadian, born in Winnipeg and spent her formative years on Queenston before the family moved to Lipton. Hers was a hard life, not only as a product of the great depression but also due to being orphaned in her early teens and left to fend for herself. She found food and lodging in return for babysitting, and was allowed to continue her schooling. While at Daniel McIntyre she worked for the Wilder pharmacy where she caught Fred's eye and heart and has been that way ever since. Fred always said she ran the best soda fountain with the best banana splits. After pursuing her for five years, they were wed in December of 1944. Not only did Joan finish high school but she continued her studies and was a gold medal winner in cooking/chef school. She applied her skills to the kitchens of the old Marlborough Hotel where she was the assistant pastry chef. Joan changed careers during the war years and worked as a comptometer operator for Burns and Company. She worked there until her first son Earle was born (1947) then she became a full-time stay-at-home homemaker. They moved to the wilds of Charleswood where Bryan (1950) and Susan (1954) were born. They lived in Charleswood for 62 years with great neighbours that she loved so dearly. Mom's life was centered on family and their happiness. Her unconditional love, warmth, and graciousness never ceased. Her home was always warm, loving and open to all family, friends and even strangers needing help. Known as Mom or Momma Joan to the entire neighbourhood, she was also known as Nana Joan to their children. Her passion was cooking, and she believed all her problems could be solved with cooking / baking and everyone else's problems could be solved with eating. She loved to feed people. Many people desire money, but to Mom security was a basement lined with food. People in need often went shopping in her basement, and shopping to mom meant unlimited spending at a Safeway, not The Bay. She was also known for her lemon meringue pies, and gladly baked them for every church's bake sale. She also knew every kid in the neighbourhood's favourite cookie and tried to keep the cookie jars full with what they liked. Mom's last 20 years were very hard with breathing problems, glaucoma, and arthritis. Never once did she complain or have a bad word for anyone. Her only request for her funeral was that someone would say something nice about her and that at least someone loved her. Rest in peace Mom, we all loved you and will miss you. A funeral service and celebration of Joan's life will be held at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Ave. on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Donna Joy officiating. Viewing will take place before the service at 9:30 a.m. Our family would like to thank the physicians and staff at St. Boniface General Hospital in the ER, 5A and especially ICU for their care and compassion. Mom believed flowers are for the living so, in lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to St. Boniface General Hospital Research Foundation, 409 Tache in St. Boniface, or the Arthritis Society at 105-386 Broadway in Winnipeg.
