VERLIE STEAD (also MACLEAN, nee MARIE VERLIE FUNK) 1946 - 2012 It is with great sorrow and compassion that we must announce the passing of Verlie Stead. Suddenly on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the St. Boniface Hospital, Verlie succumbed to a sudden illness that shocked us all. Verlie is survived by her four children, Kelly Maclean (Derek Cheng), John Maclean (Adele Benoit), Jilll Joanette (Richard Joanette), and Jake Stead (Skaija Lija), and her former husband, Douglas Stead. She is also survived by her mother, Anne Funk, and two of her four siblings, twin brother Colin Funk (Hope Funk) and Tannis Laser (Sigfried Laser), as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Her two grandchildren, Teake Henry Maclean Benoit and Samuel Douglas Joanette, also survive her. They were a great joy to her and each moment shared was a blessing and a benefit to all. Sadly, Verlie is predeceased by her father, Peter H. Funk, two of her brothers, Gerry Funk and Sheldon Funk, as well as her first husband, Rick Maclean. A strong woman, Verlie generously shared her wisdom, her compassion, her time, and her love with those in her life. She touched the lives of so many people, guiding and influencing the souls and characters of numerous individuals. Verlie never pursued material wealth for its own sake, but those close to her are familiar with her abundant generosity of spirit. In recent years, she dedicated herself to the study and practice of Buddhism, the religion of kindness. Her goal was to visit Nepal in March, to explore her spiritual path. A service in tribute to her life will occur Sunday, February 26, at 2:30 in the afternoon, at Holy Family Church, 778 Archibald Street. She is survived by her twin brother, Colin Funk (Hope), and her sister, Tannis Laser (Sig); as well as her former husband, Douglas Stead; and her four children, Kelly Maclean, John Maclean (Adele), Jilll Joanette (Richard) and Jake Stead.
