DOROTHY MAEBETH (DOT) BENNETT (nee BAIN) Dorothy passed away peacefully at the E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB, on Thursday, February 23, 2012, with family by her side, at the age of 88 years. Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her husband Cal; her children Shirley, Sherian (Ed), Sandra (Michael), Carol, Patricia (Max), Fred (Loraley), Ron (Leslie) and Robin (Barry); grandchildren Loraley, Burke, Todd, Nicole, Heidi, James, Pamela, Gordon, Marcie, Devon, Tracy, Kirk, Angela, Jeff, Jason, Adam, Blaine, Tyler, Katie, Alicia, Haley, Nicholas, Dylan, Travis, Mandy and Shane; as well as many great-grandchildren, her sister Arlene, sisters-in-law Margaret (Dan) and Kay (Doug) and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Melford and Edith; brothers Harry and Bob; sister Alona; brother-in-law Harold; and grandchildren Clay and Kyra. Dot was born in Oak Lake, Manitoba on September 3, 1923, and moved numerous times as a child. She and Cal were married on October 11, 1944, and lived all their lives on the farm in Clarkleigh until they were forced, by health, to move to the Senior Citizens Home and subsequently to the care home in Lundar. Dot worked very hard on the farm milking cows, looking after her large garden, freezing and canning her produce, caring for her family and cooking and baking for family and for the church sales. Once her family were grown she enjoyed working in the hayfield cutting hay for her boys Fred and Ron. Her hands were never idle. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and made layettes, sweaters, socks and mitts for her children and grandchildren. Dorothy made many afghans for her family and all of her grandchildren received one when they turned 18. She also made many lap blankets to donate to the Lundar Personal Care Home over the years. In later years she made baby sweaters and bonnets to sell at a store in Lundar. She also spent many hours doing paper tole, ceramics which she fired in her own kiln and painting pictures, the result of which grace the homes of all her family. Dorothy was a devoted member of the Clarkleigh United Church. She was also a member of the Lundar Christian Women's Club where she served for a time as president. Dot collected for the Canadian Red Cross for many years and also served as a leader in the Clarkleigh 4-H club. We have been so lucky to have her in our lives and will miss her dearly. We would like to express our gratitude to the Lundar Personal Care Home staff and Dr. Burnet and the staff at the E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital for their wonderful care of our Mom. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at the Clarkleigh United Church. Interment to follow at the Clarkleigh Cemetery with lunch to be held at the Lundar Legion Hall. Pallbearers will be six of her grandsons; Blaine Bennett, Tyler Bennett, Nicholas Bennett, Dylan Bennett, Devon Danielson and Jason Bergthorson. All her grandchildren are considered Honorary Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lundar Personal Care Home, c/o Judy Gleich, PO Box 296, Lundar, MB R0C 1Y0 who took such good care of our mom for the last few years. Goodbye Mom, we all love you and will miss you very much. Arrangements by: ARNASON FUNERAL HOME Ashern Lundar 1-204-768-2072 1-866-323-3593

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I was a lad early teens when Ken Bennet moved hay for us Anhangs who had bought the Thompson farm on section 21...I raked with Jessie the mare after Ken had done his part. Maybe one time I came back to the district in the 1960 from where I have lived most of these years, Montreal here in Quebec. Too bad we didnt keep in touch...I know of life everlasting so take it all as mellow as possible. So my regards to anyone who may still remember the Anhangs.!! - Posted by: William bill anhang (friend of the 1940 ties.) on: May 08, 2013

  • With fond memories of our visits home to the farm in Clarkleigh, with family time shared with the Bennett clan, where Dot was always a central figure. Whether milking the cows, behind the wheel of a truck or tractor, gardening, or making a delicious meal – Dot was incredibly adept and hardworking at fulfilling all of her duties. A true partnership with Cal! Yet, while she accomplished all of her tasks, Dot always found time to entertain us. As her children dispersed, we continued to admire Dot through her creativity and handiwork. In later years, surrounded by photographs and paintings, her love of family and faith in God were self-evident to us. Much loved and respected by Kay and Doug, Kathy, Karen, Kristen, and their families. A donation has been made to the Lundar Personal Care Home Guild in Dot’s honour. - Posted by: Karen Trimble (Niece) on: Feb 28, 2012
