SAMUEL BARBER MENAAR October 12, 1917 - February 27, 2012 Beloved and much enjoyed great-grandpa, grandpa, father and brother. He was born and raised in Lenore, MB, served in the RCAF during the Second World War and spent a lifetime working at the CPR. He enjoyed children his whole life and they enjoyed him. He was a man who had definite opinions but never tried to force them on anyone. If you cared to ask and listen, he shared a common sense wisdom that usually cut through the confusion and hit the nail on the head. He will be very much missed by all his family and friends in the days to come. Memorial service will be held on Friday, March 2 at 10:00 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I don't know why but today, I was thinking of returning to Lenore to visit the old farm site with an elememtary school across the street from it. I lost my father in December of 1983, Jeff or Huck was his name. Well, my memory of Uncle Sam was also about the great story teller and it was on a trip in 1972 that my Dad and I stopped at Sam's for BBQ and his stories were great about his job at the CPR. Well I am truly sadden to read of Sam's passing and I shed a tear in remembrance of my time of knowing him. Prayers for his family wayne - Posted by: Wayne Allen Menaar Jefferson (My Dad was a brother to my Uncle Sam) on: Jun 09, 2012

  • Sam was one of my Dad's best friends He was funny!! My Dad, Bud had close friends in every part of his life, the friends he cherished the most were the friends he had from his childhood in Lenore! I think they all joined up together. Sometimes,I didn't get their humor, but I just remembered the way that they would laugh! He had a lovely smile. What they went through in WW2 is up to them, we will never understand, cause we were not there. They came back with a sense of humour that was a wee bit odd, but I saw a friendship that would never go away! My dad Bud Hill loved him and so did I. Take heart in knowing that they are all together. - Posted by: Pat Trager (nee Hill) (One of my dad's best friends!) on: Feb 29, 2012

  • I met Sam 31 years ago,he lived across the street from us on Antrim.I remember going to the BDI for ice cream. Sam was always there for me and he filled the role of a father for me for many years, he was always there for me, and I knew if I asked him a question he would answer me truthfully. Sam never lied and he never made me feel like I had to prove anything to him he loved me no matter what I did or did not do. He took care of me and was a great grandfather to my son who loved his papa very much. Sam taught Mason how to hammer nails when Mason was 2 and saw wood and use the drill Mason enjoyed hanging out with Papa in the garage and doing 'man things' as Mason called it. I love you Dad and thank you for all you gave my son and I. I will remember the stories and keep you in my heart as will your little buddy. Love Kim and Mason. - Posted by: Kim Farley (Step daughter) on: Feb 29, 2012
