GARY THOMAS BRAZZELL, QC It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Gary Thomas Brazzell at his home on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at the age of 78. He is remembered by his wife Edith Margaret (Pixie) (nee Cox), his sister Lois Smith, his sister Phyllis (Rudy) Boivin, his daughter Cathy (Gordon) Speirs, his son Robert (Genevieve) Brazzell, his son Paul (Jennifer) Brazzell, and grandchildren Travis, Tyler, and Megan Speirs; Katrina and Stephanie Brazzell; and Garin, Anthea and Cyra Brazzell. Gary was predeceased by his father Fred and his mother Anne (nee McLaughlin). Gary was born near the hamlet of Moline, just north of Rapid City, Manitoba. He attended Brandon College and in the fall of 1953, having received his commission in the army, he enrolled at the Manitoba Law School. He articled with Johnston, Garson, Forrester, Davidson and Taylor and upon graduation joined the firm James Richardson Sons. He received his call to the bar in 1960 and then joined what is now Thompson Dorfman Sweatman and worked with the late D.A. Thompson for 15 years before establishing his own firm, which eventually was part of the firm of Taylor Brazzell McCaffrey. Gary specialized in corporate and securities law and received his appointment as Queen's Counsel in 1977. He served on the board of directors and as legal counsel for a number of public and private corporations, including Moffat Communications Limited, National Grain Company Limited, Ladco Company Limited, the Winnipeg Sun Limited, VIA Rail Canada, Videon Cable Systems Inc., and Monarch Industries Limited. He acted as legal counsel for North Portage Development Corporation from 1985 to 1991 during its development/construction stage and most recently acted as legal counsel to Tribal Councils Investment Group of Manitoba Ltd. He was a long-term member of the International Bar Association and served as honorary counsel for Mexico in Winnipeg. Gary's dedicated fundraising benefited a variety of groups including Brandon University Foundation, Alzheimer's residence and research, the Conservative Party of Manitoba and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments and reveled in the activities and achievements of his grandchildren. Gary will be remembered at a memorial service on Tuesday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Suite 200 - 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6.
