Date of Passing: Mar 01, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN WALTER NIXON 1931 - 2012 It is with sadness we announce the passing of John Nixon on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the age of 80. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Molly, of 55 years; his children, John (Carol), Kevin (Dawn), Doreen (Ralph), Stuart (Connie) and Beth; his grandchildren, John Aaron, Jennifer, Johnathon, Melissa, Stephanie, Keysha, Shanice, Trinity, Keisha, Karl, Kirstie, Molly, Marina, Erica, Iain (Amy) and Sean; his sister, Betty; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. John began his working career as a farmer and later moved into the sales industry, first selling hydraulic equipment and then onto car sales with Birchwood Automotive. John was actively involved in his community; through Kinsman he started the Winnipeg Horse Show. He was also passionate about football and was involved in Pop Warner and junior football in Winnipeg. John was probably best known as the Oak Park Raiders biggest fan. Most importantly John loved his family; his grandchildren brought him much joy and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. He will be deeply missed by his family. The family would like to offer special thanks to all the staff on the fourth floor at the Grace Hospital for the kindness and compassionate care of John during his time there. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Chad's Anglican Church, located at 3390 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Doreen, So sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a great man. He was very understanding and a great supporter of the Prairie Pipe Band Region and of course Highland dancing. I only knew him briefly many years ago but he showed me at a young age how to look for the good in mankind. My thoughts are with your family. Colin Brown (former Pine Falls Pipe Band). - Posted by: Colin Brown (friend ) on: Jul 12, 2012

Mr. Nixon, and the Nixon family, were a big part of my life as a teen. I was in the Henderson Highlanders Pipe Band with John, Kevin and Stuart, and Mr. and Mrs. Nixon were an integral part of running this young group of musicians. One of the benefits of playing football and rugby with Kevin and Stu was being able to spend time talking with Mr. Nixon. I always enjoyed our conversations and he was easily the most passionate fan of his sons' teams. - Posted by: Jim Beatty () on: Mar 06, 2012

To the loving family of John's, to Molly and John Jr., Carol and all those whom I knew while at St. Chad's, may you find strength in your faith, and may John rest in paradise. We regret that we will be unable to be at the funeral since I will be in class at that time, but I will say a prayer for all of you.- Gordon and Valerie Shields - Posted by: Rev. John was one of the biggest football fathers that I will ever know. Whether it was supporting his sons when they played, when they became coaches, or when he helped with the Pop Warner League. His heart was so large. A man like him can never be replaced. I can see him up there with my late father starting a football team of angels. God be with you John. Rest in Peace! - Posted by: BILL MARK JR (FAMILY FRIEND, TEAMMATE OF KEVIN AND STUART, ST. JAMES COBRAS) on: Mar 05, 2012

We will remember Mr. Nixon as a friend and gentleman on the sidelines of all the Oak Park football games. He was interested in the little fans as well as the players & always had an encouraging kind word for them; Skipp was one of them and he loved seeing Mr. Nixon at the games.
