PETER WASYLOWSKI (March 25, 1926 March 2, 2012) On March 2, 2012, at the age of 85, Peter passed away with his wife and children by his side. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 58 years, Evelyn; children Garry, Elaine Gordon and Grace (Grant) Rogoski; grandchildren Felicia (Stewart), Brent, Chad, Cody, Marlee, Tyler and Brittany; brother Stanley (Millie) and his sister Jean (Tony) Hykawy. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Deborah in 2010. Peter was born in Winnipeg to Metro and Mary, and grew up in the Fraserwood area. After losing his mother at an early age, he was raised by his father and grandparents. In his youth, Peter enjoyed playing the violin at local barn dances, as part of a band with his brother and sister. In 1944, Peter was drafted into the army and was stationed in Chilliwack, BC. He was discharged when the war ended two years later. After returning home, he purchased himself a farm west of Fraserwood. Around this same time, he met Evelyn and they married in 1953, and they had two children, Garry and Elaine. In 1965, the family moved to Winnipeg where Peter worked as a painter and welder. Soon after their daughter Grace was born. In 1968, the family moved back to Fraserwood, where Peter opened Pete's General Store, with his wife. The family operated the store for the next 20 years, while Peter also kept a small farm. After retiring from farming, Peter still loved to be on the farm. His happiest days were spent at his son's farm helping to cut hay, sort cattle and build shelters or just spending the day cutting wood. He took great pride in his vegetable gardens and enjoyed making borsht, paska, pickles and pickled carrots. In 2005, Peter suffered a serious stroke and moved to Betel Personal Care Home in Gimli. Peter faced many challenges during this time, but with his loving wife by his side, he was able to overcome them. While at Betel, he liked to go fishing or play games with the other residents, but most of all he enjoyed the visits from his children and grandchildren. Family was very important to Peter. He was very proud of his children and all they accomplished, and they always appreciated that he was there to help them whenever they needed him. His grandchildren meant the world to him, and he cherished every moment he spent with them. Over the past couple of months he was looking forward to the spring arrival of his first great grandchild. Peter will be missed by all of us. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around you and whispered Come with me. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. A memorial service will be held for Peter on Thursday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnson Hall at the Waterfront Centre in Gimli. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Box 57, Fraserwood, MB, R0C 1A0. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Mr Wasylowski, It was with great sadness that I learned of your passing. I remember the times I used to come roaring into Fraserwood with my GTO and you would be standing outside the store and would always wave to me, or at all the socials and weddings when we used to sit and talk. I was a kid back then and held you in great respect and high regard. You are truly a great man, and raised a wonderful family. I remember when I gave you the Penner hat that I heard you still wore. I know I can look to you to keep me safe on the Highway. Rest in Peace My Friend. - Posted by: Terry Wilchuk (Friend) on: Mar 10, 2012

  • Sending sincere condolences to Evelyn and all the family. I have very fond memories of Peter and Evelyn, visiting Pete's store as a child growing up. I remember Peter as a gentle person with a twinkle in his eye, always asking if I needed a torba for the candy I was getting at the store. I never knew much Ukrainian language at that point, but I always knew I needed a torba at Pete's store. May your memories be kept close to your hearts, and may he be at peaceful rest. - Posted by: Kristie Karish (friend) on: Mar 09, 2012
