JOHN (JACK) WALTER HEUVEL Sadly, on March 4, 2012, John (Jack) Walter Heuvel passed away at age 79. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Gloria, his daughter Lindor Reynolds (Neil Dempsey), granddaughter Kate Reynolds (Alex McPhaden), son Richard (Brenda Ostafichuk) and grandchildren Chantel, John and Nichole Heuvel. He also leaves great-grandson Derek Heuvel, and step-grandchildren Haley, Jill and Emma Dempsey. He was predeceased by his parents Marion and John, brother Gordon, and son Scott. Jack was born June 8, 1932. He would remain a West Kildonan boy for all but the last three years of his life. He and Gloria spent 50 years at 4 Teakwood, raising three children, entertaining and reveling in Jack's Shack , their cottage at the back of the property. He began his career as a payroll accountant for the Prairie Region of the Canadian National Railways. He was a CNR personnel supervisor for 10 years. During his tenure with the railway, train travel and stays in CN hotels marked family vacations. In his earlier years, Jack was a school trustee. He was also a member of the provincial government's Public School Finance Board in 1970 and 1971. In 1972 he became the Director of Administration for the Community Colleges Division of the Manitoba Department of Colleges and Universities Affairs. He retired at 58 but never stopped working. He began an educational consulting firm. He helped shepherd the first use of computers in colleges and universities. Most significantly on a professional and personal level, he was an advisor and friend to the late Honourable Ron Duhamel. Jack was very active in the community. He was a Cub leader and involved with both St. Anne and Holy Trinity Anglican churches. He was on the board of the Canadian Mental Health Association. He served for many years on the board of Rossbrook House. He loved the Bombers and had season tickets for years. One of the highlights of his life was visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Jack was a passionate collector of Canadian art. Travel filled his later years. He and Gloria visited Asia, Europe, the New England states and Barbados. That island would become a second home. Jack leaves many close friends, especially Russell and Linda Clarke, in mourning on his favourite island. The family would like to thank Dr. Pat Harris, Dr. John Rabson, and the medical and nursing staff on South 5 at the Victoria General Hospital. The funeral will be held on Thursday, March 8 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Donald at Graham. Pallbearers will be Neil Dempsey, Richard Heuvel, John Heuvel, Alex McPhaden, Orlando Athayde and Phil Chiappetta. Burial at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main St. will follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice or to the J. Scott Heuvel Scholarship Fund at Rossbrook House, 658 Ross Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3A 0M1. Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • Sad to hear Jack passed. Sad he missed so much of his son and granddaughter's lives. Very sad for Gloria. One thing you knew about Jack & Gloria is they were a couple that walked in complete unison. Definitely demonstrating ultimate love for one another. I wish Gloria the best in learning to live without the love of her life...it's a tough road...I too travel it. Their son J. Scott, my spouse still shares my heart and forever will. - Posted by: Deborah Heuvel (daughter-in-law) on: Jun 27, 2012

  • Jack was a great mentor at work, and he and Gloria introduced me to the beauty of Barbados. I fondly remember our sunset celebrations. Deepest sympathies to the entire family. - Posted by: Luci Grechen (Former Work Colleague ) on: Mar 09, 2012

  • My thoughts and prayers are with you now. As dear friends of my parents, Helen and Perry Kelly, I wish you the comfort of friends and family you so kindly offered my mother over the years after my Dad passed. I have fond memories of the visits in Lac Du Bonnet and cherish the Robert Kost paintings. I remember when you chose one of our dog's puppies and know that Jack very much enjoyed their time together. Good memories. - Posted by: Sheilagh Antoniuk (Teakwood Friends) on: Mar 08, 2012

  • My condolences to Jack's family. I am in Florida watching some spring training baseball games which Jack would appreciate so will not be able to attend the service on Thursday. Jack hired me in the community college branch and I'll always remember the support he gave me as we developed a new position under his leadership. As well as being a mentor he was a friend. - Posted by: Kent Morgan (Work Colleague) on: Mar 07, 2012

  • I did not know Lindor's larger-than-life dad but I do know his daughter: She's got so many sterling qualities, that the glow she shows puts her dad's memory in a very warm light. - Posted by: Alexandra Paul (friend of daughter Lindor ) on: Mar 06, 2012
