FRITZ HERKERT 1920 - 2012 It is with a great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Fritz on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at Tuxedo Villa in his 92nd year. Fritz was predeceased by his wife Gertrude in 1990, son Randy in 2009, and second wife Kay Sheppard in 2005. He will be lovingly remembered by his children; Patricia (Steve), Judy (Gary), Raymond (Sue), Linda (Jordy), Nancy (John) and daughter-in-law Helen, son-in-law Walter McLarty, stepsons Richard (Kim) Sheppard, Wes (Jodi) Sheppard, 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, brother Paul Herkert (96) Otto Herkert (95) and William Herkert (89) as well as many relatives, friends and neighbours. Dad was born in Chatsworth, Illinois, USA in 1920 and in 1922 he came to Canada with his mom, dad and brothers and settled in the Sanford area where he grew up. Dad met the love of his life Gertrude and they were married in 1940. Together they farmed and raised six children. Dad also did custom baling and worked for local farmers until 1967 when he started working as a welder for Versatile Farm Equipment Company until he retired at age 65 in 1985. Dad enjoyed farming, gardening, camping and going to the beach. After the passing of Gertrude, Dad found love again with family friend Kay and they were together for 15 years until her passing. Dad and Kay joined a trailer club and went on many campouts including a caravan to the west coast and back home through the states; they also travelled to many places for Wes's bagpipe competitions. Dad was a hard working, gentle person and a man of few words with an easy going nature. He was a great lover of old-time fiddle music. You could often hear it playing when you stopped by for a visit. Any time anyone needed a hand doing something, they could always count on Dad to lend a hand. Family was important to dad and he showed his love in quiet subtle ways. The family would like to thank Agnes and all her Earth Angels of Starbuck Home Care who lovingly looked after dad until he moved to Tuxedo Villa. Their care and compassion allowed dad to stay at home on the farm for a longer period of time. The family would also like to extend a huge thank you to the staff at Tuxedo Villa for their care and compassion while dad resided there. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to CancerCare Manitoba. Funeral service will take place on Monday, March 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue with interment and reception to follow. Viewing will be held half hour prior to the service. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715
