Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELENE CHARTRAND Peacefully, on March 14, 2012, Hélène Chartrand (née De Graeve) passed away at Holy Family Home. Hélène was born in Belgium on July 31, 1925. Following Belgium's liberation, in 1945 she fell in love and married Joe, a Canadian infantryman. After landing at Pier 21 in Halifax as a new war bride, she moved into a remote location in northern Manitoba and began raising a family. Hélène loved gardening, crocheting, needlework and, most of all, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be truly missed. She is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Lucien Chartrand, father, Aimé De Graeve, mother, Maria-Celine Cozijns, her two sisters, Marie-Elvire Cremelie and Stephanie De Smeijter, and her grandson, Richard Riki Chartrand. Hélène is remembered by her six children: Richard (Adele), Yvonne (Bill), Shirley (Wes), Linda (d. Michael), Michel (Brenda) and Kathy (Glen); her grandchildren: Tammy, Dawn, Angela, Nicole, Jessica, Wesley, Jared, Michael, Genevieve, Kaitlin, Christine and Adam; and by her great-grandchildren: Caden, Livia, Jackson, Nicole, Nathan, Riki, Isabella, Massimo, Alessandro, Elijah, Andrew, Elliot and Oliver. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 16 at St. Gerard Parish, 45 Foster Street, Winnipeg, MB, at 11:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest during a private burial at Brookside Cemetery, next to her husband Joseph. The family would greatly like to thank the staff and care givers at Holy Family Home, particularly the St. Francis and A3 wards. Mom received a kindness and generosity of human caring throughout her stay from these wonderful people. I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Helene. I have many memories of my mom and yours having tea and a good gossip together. My favourite story is of when your mother first came to Canada and visiting with my mom and eating home canned plums.
