KEITH WILSON Keith Wilson passed away at home on March 28, 2012 at the age of 82 years with his family by his side. Keith was born on August 14, 1929 in Newport, Shropshire, the son of Maurice and Winifred Mary Wilson. His primary and secondary education was at Adams Grammar School. He received his BA and MA from Sheffield University, his M.Ed. from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In 1954, with other prospective teachers, he answered an advertisement in the Times wanting teachers in Manitoba. He set sail for Quebec City and from there, continued to Winnipeg. At the end of the first term, he left for New Zealand and taught at a school in Waipu for a semester. From New Zealand, he returned to England and taught for a year in Manchester at Bridgewater Grammar School. He came back to Manitoba where he taught high school for two years at Melita, followed by a year at Brandon College teaching history and Latin. He joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba in 1960 where his main interest was in Canadian Studies. He rose during the years to become head of the department of Education and foundations and Assistant Dean. He wrote several books which were curriculum materials. He also was a pioneer in establishing correspondence courses in the faculty. When he retired in 1988, he was the first member of the Faculty of Education to be awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of Education. Predeceased by his parents and his brother Derek, he is survived by his wife Dorothy, sons Eric and Ian, sister Moira, and several cousins, nephews, and nieces. The family would like to thank the many Homecare workers and staff of Victoria General Hospital for providing companionship and support. There will be no funeral service. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Keith gave me my first opportunity to teach at the university. As a freshly cropped Ph.D. I did not always value Keith's approach to academia. However, he prevailed and made a substantial contribution to education in his adopted province. RIP my friend and condolences to you who are left to cherish his memory. - Posted by: Neil McDonald () on: Apr 14, 2012

  • Condolences to the family. Thank you to Dr. Wilson for the important role he played in the initiation of school librarianship training programs at Faculty of Education. In his time, the specialization in Teacher-Librarianship made it possible for Manitobans to become qualified here. He organized sequential summer session programs, and hired Geoff Chapman as the first full-time instructor. He made a significant contribution to education in Manitoba in his day. Personally, I thank him too for his patient guidance in my research and Master's in Education thesis. May our memories of this fine man linger and support us at this time. - Posted by: Gerald R.
