Born in Barbados on January 12, 1930 and predeceased by her mother Eunice Watson in 1984, Vernese is survived by her sister Velda Craig, her nieces and nephew Juliette Taylor, Julianne Craig, Hugo Craig (Lisa), Gail Craig-Archer (Craig) and their children Blair, Christopher and Ryan, all of Barbados. Vernese is also survived by her cousin Joyce (Winnipeg), her cousins Joan and Wendy (Toronto), Phyllis and Collin (Ottawa), Gloria and Brenda (Barbados) and all their families. Vernese was educated at St. Philip Primary, Church Village, Barbados and then was employed on the island prior to immigrating to Canada in 1959. Vernese arrived in Winnipeg in 1959 to join the Leach family as their beloved housekeeper. She cared for and was loved by five generations of Leaches over 50 years, including Frances and Searle, their children Gus (Gail), Larry (Dale), Gil (deceased), Norm (Johanne), Linda (Mike Radcliffe) and Judy Purkis, their grandchildren / spouses and great-grandchildren. The Leach family members have special memories of this selfless, caring woman who championed the happiness of five generations. She will be remembered by all their friends for her outstanding and always-available chocolate chip cookies! Vernese also leaves countless friends in Winnipeg, across Canada, Barbados and many countries around the world. In particular, she leaves her closest friend Helen Liverpool, her husband Fixroyed and their family. For many years, Vernese was involved with the Caribbean Seniors of Manitoba and also The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Association of Winnipeg. She was a board member of Harambee Housing Cooperative Ltd. Vernese was a devoted Christian throughout her life, initially a member of St. Philip Parish Church in Barbados and then St. George's Church Crescentwood (Winnipeg). She sang heartily each week during the winter months in the choir of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Delray Beach, Florida, and then was a parishioner of All Saints' Anglican Church, Winnipeg. Her faith was pivotal to her, and she lived each day based on her strong Christian beliefs and principles. Vernese's immediate and extended families thank the Simkin Centre and the Dialysis Unit of the Health Sciences Centre for their compassionate care of Vernese over the past two years. Vernese was always aware of, and very grateful for, the loving care she received from their nurses, pastoral staff and health care aides. In addition, we give our appreciation to Shirley Melanson and Susan Sahan for their special attention to Vernese. A service will be held to honour Vernese's life on Wednesday, April 11 at 2:00 p.m. at All Saints' Anglican Church, NW Broadway and Osborne, Winnipeg. Vernese was my second cousin, first cousin to my mother, Joyce Simmons. She was a very loving person who was able to maintain a strong family tie to her sister in Barbados, her nieces and nephew and their children despite many miles between them. Her spirit was strong and she had a very contented happy life in Winnipeg with visits to Barbados on occasion, the land of her birth. She just loved working with and being a part of the Leach family. She took pride in her work and spent many years with all of the wonderful people who came into her life. Vernese, we were so proud to have you in our family. You touched many lives. Your spirit will live on among us. Rest in paeace. - Posted by: Antoinette Zloty (Cousin) on: Apr 11, 2012

I will always remember her enthusiasm and straight forward responses. There was an honesty about it that even at times would be hard to bear. God has given us all gifts to share and vernese has fullfilled this, and so I have no doubt that she is at peace and rejoicing in his house! - Posted by: Judy Friesen (second couisin) on: Apr 11, 2012

At 6 am one summer morning at Mr (Searle) and Mrs Leach's cottage, Vernese surprised me as I was sitting on the floor in front of the fridge drinking a coke. Her comment? Not a very healthy breakfast, Wendy. - Posted by: Wendy Dahlgren (Friend through Linda) on: Apr 08, 2012

My memories of the Leach family are entwined with dear Vernese. She was always there for us as we grew up, with a ready smile and a willingness to "cut us some slack" when we stepped over the line. What a woman! - Posted by: Kathy England (Friend) on: Apr 08, 2012

I'll miss her jokes, her advice, her wllingness to listen, her straight talking so that you knew just where you stood. She would say something and when I would be laughing she'd say "Don't laugh" and then she'd start to laugh. Or she'd make a point and end by saying "Just call it a day." I found that when talking to her I'd say the same thing. When I'd phone her after a long time she'd say"Well, well, well." Then I'd say "How are you Miss V?" She'd say"The old girl is still here." She called me V. Then we'd be on the phone for an hour or more catching up. Rest in peace Miss V. God bless. - Posted by: Vinny Ashton (Friend) on: Apr 06, 2012
