MARY KIERNAN January 17, 1923 April 1, 2012 Born at home in Broxburn Scotland, January 17, 1923 to John and Helen Easton, Mum was the oldest daughter of seven children. She is survived by her brother Jimmie, and sisters Kathleen, and Tina and predeceased by her brothers John and Frank, and sister Ella. Life was interrupted by the Second World War which led to her in time joining the WRNS with whom she served in the Shetlands, Egypt and South Africa. Upon her return to Scotland she worked for the Civil Service Forestry Commission and acted as the Secretary of the British Committee National Union Council, one of the few women on Council at that time. In 1953 she married childhood friend and the love of her life, Ted Kiernan and in 1958 followed Dad, a teacher, to Winnipeg, Canada. Mum was involved in all aspects of her community from Crescentwood Community Centre to St. Ignatius Parish and School. Mum served on the Parish's School Board, Parish Council, and CWL, and enjoyed many of the social clubs and events. In 1966 she accepted an offer from Fr. Jake Driscoll to work to keep the doors of St. Paul's High School open for a few more years. Mum's social conscience always remained strong and was evidenced in her involvement with: Rossbrook House; Immaculate Conception Drop in Center; as a Minister of the Eucharist; support for Central American refugees; Darjeeling Mission Club; and Development and Peace. In 1976 mum left St. Paul's to join dad in Norway House beginning her career with the RCMP and life in the north. Upon retirement from the RCMP she went to work in a paid position at St. Ignatius as Administrative Assistant, finally retiring in her seventies. With retirement she and dad continued to pursue their love for travel, time with friends, coffee with the 11:00 a.m. St. Ignatius community and being brilliant grandparents. Mum lived in the family home up until eight weeks ago before moving to palliative care. Mum stays in the memories and hearts of her children John (Patti Regan), Kate (Tom Vowell) and her grandchildren Laura, Julie and Fiona, as well as her many friends and neighbours. She is greatly missed. If you would like to make a contribution in Mum's memory please consider the Sisters of the Holy Names - House of Peace - a residential community that is a safe home for women in transition: newcomers, refugees and immigrants, 211 Edmonton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 1R4; or to St. Ignatius Parish 255 Stafford St. Winnipeg, MB R3M 2X2. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 9, 2012, 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford St., with a reception to follow in the church hall. Aunt Mary arrived in Canada in time to welcome my parents to Winnipeg and attend their wedding in 1958. She attended my christening and became an important part of my life after that. Many days and nights were spent at Mulvey Road. She told me that I was never too old for her to give me a kiss. I guess she was right. The Kiernans are family to me. My condolences to my 'cousins' John and Kathleen - Posted by: Ian Kilgour ("adopted" nephew) on: Apr 11, 2012

Both Mary & Ted were such good examples of Catholic parishioners at St. Ignatius. I reminisced with Mary just last summer about the rummage sales and the Darjeeling support given back in the 60's and 70's with my mother, Kitty Keegan for CWL. Ted was there to give my father communion for the last time before he died in 1994. God take her to her reward. We will miss her wonderful smile and comforting presence. - Posted by: Sheila ( Keegan) Williams (My mother Kitty Keegan was a good friend.) on: Apr 08, 2012

I knew Mary for forty years as a client first but what came out of that relationship was so wonderful. We became friends and with that I also came to know Ted and her two children. Mary was so kind and generous to me and treated me with respect and inclusion. I always enjoyed the time we spent together both as a friend and client. Her wit and intelligence were uplifting but it was her faith that influenced me most. Mary will always be to me a prime example of how to live one's life. I will miss her so much Affectionately Larry Oertel - Posted by: Larry Oertel (Friend ) on: Apr 07, 2012

We learned to know and love Mary after son, Tom Vowell, and Kate Kiernan were married. Each time we came to Winnipeg to visit them we looked forward to getting to visit with Mary as well. She always had such interesting stories to tell. She was one of the sweetest ladies we have known. Our condolences to all of the family. Our heartfelt sympathies at your loss. We have so many fond memories of both your mom and dad popping in for visits on their way home from mass. I even recall them delighting in taking our little ones for walks in their strollers. Mary always had time for everyone and I will miss our wee chats . Our thoughts and prayers are with you all... - Posted by: Greig & Heather Lynch (friend) on: Apr 05, 2012
