Thora, the youngest child of the late Thomas and Isabella Bews Craigie, was predeceased by her parents, brothers and sisters, and by Douglas, her husband for 64 years. She is survived by her daughters, Moira (Wayne) Neufeld, Steinbach, and Margaret (Robert) Irwin, Ottawa; her grandchildren, Stephen and David Irwin, and Brette Neufeld; her sister-in law Joyce Young; nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, the Orkney Islands and the U.S.A. Thora was born in Fort William, Ontario on February 1, 1923. She attended schools in Fort William and graduated from the University of Toronto in Honour English in 1945. She received a specialist's diploma in English from the College of Education in Toronto in 1946. She and Doug were married in Wesley United Church in Fort William in 1947. Thora and Doug lived in Winnipeg until Doug's ordination into the ministry of the United Church of Canada in 1959. They served United Churches in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Winnipeg (Kildonan), Melbourne and Emo, Ontario and retired in Winnipeg in 1985. Following retirement, Thora and Doug reconnected with old friends, enjoyed travelling, took up oil painting, and spent summers at the family log cabin in the wilderness of northern Ontario. Thora was proud of her Orcadian Scots heritage, and she and Doug kept up her family ties with visits to the Orkney Isles, Scotland, upstate New York, and across Canada. Thora was closely connected with the church all her life and treasured the friendships formed in C.G.I.T., U.C.W., and the choirs in her many church homes. She has been fortunate throughout her life to have very dear friends in Winnipeg and in many parts of Ontario. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Jeri Bjornson officiating.
