Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET MCEWAN SMITH (nee KNOX) Sadly, on April 3, 2012 Margaret Smith of Eriksdale, MB passed away at the age of 93 years in the local E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital. Margaret was born on June 13, 1918 in Weyburn, SK, the eldest of four children born to John H. Knox and Etta (McEwan) Knox. In 1920 the family moved to Eriksdale where she continued to live throughout her life. On June 18, 1936 she married William A. J. (Bill) Smith in the Old Kildonan Presbyterian Church in Winnipeg and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986. In the early 1960s Margaret began working at the E. M. Crowe Memorial Hospital and often spoke fondly of her association there until her retirement in 1983. In 1968 she achieved a long held dream of completing nurses training. She graduated from the Licensed Practical Nurses program in Winnipeg, receiving the Proficiency Award for highest standing in the January class. Margaret supported her community throughout the years with membership in the United Church, the United Church Women's Group, the Order of the Eastern Star and an almost 75 year membership in the Hospital Guild. Her hobbies included knitting, reading and travelling with a number of trips with family or friends to locations in Canada and the United States. A highlight was a trip to Scotland and the Orkney Islands in 1981 where her beloved grandmother Annie McEwan came from. For the past 17 years she enjoyed the apartment and friendships made while living at Lindell Manor. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, stepmother Barbara, brothers W. Howard, Cormack (Tom), and Clarance (Corky) Knox, husband Bill (1988), daughter-in-law Sylvia (Thompson) Smith (2011), and granddaughter Lynn Kiendl (2012). As a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by daughter Beverley (Roger) Kiendl, grandson Bill (Kirsten) Kiendl, great-grandson Jackson Kiendl, grandson Anthony Kiendl (Joanne Bristol); son Clint Smith, granddaughter Michele (Brad) Ahlquist, great-grandson Brett Johnson, grandson David Smith, granddaughter Tammy (Rick) Irving, great-granddaughter Kasey Irving, great-grandson Cole Irving; sister-in-law Helga Knox along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Eriksdale Recreation Centre with Melanie Kauppila officiating. Interment to follow in the Eriksdale Cemetery.
