Date of Passing: Apr 04, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPHYLLIS JEAN COMMON (nee SAMPSON) One person does make a difference. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Phyllis Jean Common on April 4, 2012 at the age of 89 years old. Our mother will be lovingly remembered by her children Sharon Ibison (Reg), Ron Common (Lorraine), Raymond Common (Heather), Linda Kuhn (Curtis), and her younger sister Yvonne. Jean loved children. Her love of children blossomed even more with her grandchildren, Scott (Stefanie), Danny (Karen), Chris (Elsie), Tammy (Denam), Jenny (David), Jaimie (Gord), Alex, Lauren (Scott) and MacKenzie. She was a great-grandmother as well as a great-great-grandmother. Mom was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1922. She was predeceased by her husband, Lorne, who passed away in 1986. Jean and Lorne were married in 1942. After the Second World War, they were stationed in Europe and throughout western Canada before settling in Winnipeg in 1958. Jean loved to be with people, and easily made many friends at Dakota House where she was living. She had many interests, including flower gardening and knitting; her favourite was curling. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at the Victoria General Hospital. Please join us in celebration of Jean's life for a memorial service at the United Meadowood Church at 1111 Dakota Street on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Rainbow Society. THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 BROADWAY, WINNIPEG, MB R3C OX4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com

I just learned of Jean's passing. My deepest sympathies to all of her family. I knew Jean when she was a young girl, but our family affiliations go farther back. I was always told that my grandfather, William Crampton, brought Jean's dad, Wilfred, out west on the train to Woodrow from Ontario. Wilfred traveled with, and looked after, the carload of horses my grandfather was shipping to Woodrow by train. I grew up a mile from the farm that Jean and Yvonne lived on at Woodrow, and I was best man at Yvonne's wedding. Jean was six years older than me. I'll never forget her Shetland pony that pulled her cart to and from Woodrow School, or at least was supposed to. Half the time, part way to school, it would turn around and head back home again, and boy would Jean get mad when it did that. That was one truly stubborn pony! It's been many years since I have seen Jean when she and Lorne stopped in Edmonton in the early 60's. I fondly remember playing with Sherry and Ronnie when they lived in Currie Barracks in Calgary. Jean visited us in Lethbridge in the 1950's and we always heard news of her generosity in the 70's from Uncle Cliff when he travelled from Winnipeg back to British Columbia, stopping in Edmonton enroute. I offer our sincerest sympathy to her family as you celebrate her life. Rosemarie and my sisters, Maureen and Carolyn Ireton - Posted by: Rosemarie Keiller (nee Ireton) (cousin) on: Apr 14, 2012

Our deepest sympathy to all of Jean's family. Her kindness and generosity to a country girl and roommate of Sharon's will never be forgotten. The visits and phone calls will be remembered with fondness. I know that she has left a treasure trove of fond memories to all who knew her. - Posted by: Donna and Bruce Staniland (friends) on: Apr 12, 2012

Sherry, Ron, Raymond and Linda: Aunty Jean was a wonderful role model who loved all and a smile came very easy to her. I particularly enjoyed the overnight stays where we took in the movies at the outdoor theater in a Volkswagon bug. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
