NICHOLAS FERENS June 5, 1929 - April 9, 2012 It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Nicholas Ferens. Nick is survived by his loving wife Ruth (nee Pasaluko), sons James (Shelley), Patrick (Lisa) and Trevor (Ginger), grandchildren Chad, Shayna, Kristina, Jade, Rhylan and Brock, extended families, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Nick was predeceased by his mother and father, Dmytro and Anna, and siblings Sophie, Mike, Bill, John, Ada, Mary, Lena (elder), Lena (younger), Eric and Peter. Nick was the youngest of the family. Nick was born at the Ferens Family homestead in Green Oak, MB. As a child, he always wanted to go to Beausejour, a mere 10 miles away, his first trip being to the town market at the age of 13. He enjoyed the evenings when he and his siblings would gather together and listen to stories on the radio. In his youth he enjoyed playing baseball with his brothers and swimming in the Brokenhead River. He married Ruth Pasaluko on July 7, 1956. Before starting their family, they spent six years working together in bush camps. He spent many years working in northern Manitoba for Malcolm Construction, several other construction companies closer to home, the RM of Brokenhead and retired from Arc Industries in 1988, and spent many years working the family farm. He enjoyed sharing time with friends and family playing cards and Cribbage, once being very excited to get a "29 hand", playing horseshoes and fishing. His favourite times were when his sons, and then grandchildren, helped him look after all the animals on their hobby farm. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing solitaire, and was very meticulous when working in their many flower and vegetable gardens. Not only did he mend his own socks, he also enjoyed doing cross-stitch embroidery, and once even won a ribbon at the Town Fair. His favourite pastime was raising chickens, hatching the chicks himself, and gathering the eggs. His love for chickens began when, as a child, he spent many, many nights sleeping in the family chicken coop, tending the fire during the night so that chicks would stay warm. One of his favourite gifts ever was a membership to the local chapter of the Cluck Quack Poultry Club. Nick's family wish to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Peter Bialy and the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital, his Home Care workers, with a special thanks to Florence, for all their kindness with his care, and to the ALS Society for their support. You have all held a special place in Nick's heart. Memorial Service to be held Monday, April 16, at 10:00 a.m. at the Garson Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society of Manitoba, 493 Madison Street, Winnipeg, MB R3J 1J2. Seasons Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

  • I will tresure the times sitting around your kitchen table with a coffee just shooting the breeze with Nick. My favorite memory is the day Arlen (around 3 years old at the time) wanted to get a rooster feather, Nick told him he had to run around like a chicken to catch the rooster. So with his rubber boots on he started clucking and moving his arms like a chicken, while Nick just stood there with a big grin on his face. Although we didn't see him very often over the last 8 years, he always gave a hug and a smile that made me feel like we had never moved away. He will be missed. - Posted by: Melodie, Marty & family (friend) on: Apr 13, 2012
