WALTER PEREPELUK
Date of Passing: Apr 13, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWALTER PEREPELUK This is Walter William Perepeluk, but you probably knew him as Walt if you're a friend, or Dad, Grandpa, or The Chief, if you're a part of the family. After an eventful 84 years, Dad passed away peacefully at sunrise on Friday, April 13, surrounded by family. Born in Sifton, MB, on April 17, he was one of five children of Bill and Effie Perepeluk. He grew up in Rorkton where his father opened a store, Central Meat Grocery, then later moved to Flin Flon. When his dad decided to expand the business to the new mining community of Lynn Lake in Central Manitoba, Walt, along with his wife Amy, moved there to manage it for the next 36 years. Walt was very community orientated and was a long and valued member of several committees, Chamber of Commerce, Hospital Board, Fire Ambulance Depts, NorMan, Lion's Club, Eastern Star and Masonic Lodge, all of which he took an active roll. For years, every Tuesday night, he could be found in the Breeze Office printing the local paper. He was elected the first Mayor of Lynn Lake and spent many hours trying to provide a better community for it's residents, including the highway into Lynn, and television. He annually presented Penmanship Awards at school, so the kids he hired would be able to write so he could read it. Many kids also tuned their driving skills delivering groceries in that red delivery truck. Walt was happiest when he could help someone out, whether it be holding a crying youngster in the store, comforting them with a sticky candy, organizing the Red Cross Blitz, driving someone wherever they needed to go, cooking, bringing in a big Roland Pumpkin grown by Amy's Uncle for the Lynn Lake kids to see, meeting the train close to midnight so customers along the line could come and shop and then delivering their groceries to the train early the next morning, part of the committee for the 95 LL Reunion, helping his kids and grandkids with whatever we needed or just brightening your day with his latest joke. At some point in his life, Walt was a teacher, grocer, smoker, bowler, tax-payer, curler, cook, pilot, jack-of-all-trades, fisherman, Liberal, window-washer, photographer, leader, son, brother, husband, dad, uncle, and grandpa, but mostly a golfer, a crib player, and a friend to all. We will remember Dad sitting at the kitchen table watching the weather channel, counting the train cars, and playing crib. Walt was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Amy in 2001, and his brothers and sisters. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his sons, Douglas, a.k.a. Joe, (Sharon), Ron, (Elaine), a daughter, Wynne (Butch), grandchildren, Patrick, Chris, Tobi, Robyn, David, Daniel, Colin, Ronald and greatgrands, Bryce, Ava, Logan and Hayden. A celebration of his life will take place Tuesday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the Canadian Cancer Society in Walt's memory. Neil Bardal Funeral Centre (204)949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca

I’m about 9 years too late but stumbled upon this notice. I encountered Walt on my arrival in Lynn in 1960 as I arrived to work at Sherritt as a new mining engineer. He was just the guy to equip a Young Fellow with a fishing outfit and I still have the tackle box bought from his store. Most of the tackle is at the bottom of Vanderkerchove, of course! When I married in 1961 and brought my English wife Diana to this strange place in Canada, she thought it was great (correctly) and loved going to Perps for bits and bobs. Being nearly broke after our honeymoon in Western Canada, we once wrote a small cheque to Walt, that unfortunately bounced back from our bank just next door! We were mortified but Walt said “it doesn’t matter, sort it some time” which of course we did! A great and kindly man! - Posted by: Robin Oram (Long-ago shop customer) on: Jun 12, 2023

The best memory I have of Walter was when he used to make the stores deposit at the bank. He would wait till it was very quiet and the teller was busy counting, and he would blow up a paper bag and pop it. There would be gasps, and A scream or two. He wouldn't laugh but there was a glimmer in his eye that said mission accomplished. Ha,ha. - Posted by: Lisa () on: Apr 27, 2012

As a teenager I helped do inventory in the store one year and afterwards he provided a delicious BBQ'd meal. The meat was exceptionally tasty and I learned that his secret was Montreal Steak Spice, which I use to this day! As a young adult, as receptionist at the local paper I had regular contact with him when he printed off The Northern Breeze. I found "Mr Perpeluk" to be a kind hearted gentleman, always fair and above board. May he rest in peace & may God comfort his extended family as they mourn his passing. - Posted by: Debbie (Carlson) Hochachka (former Lynn Laker) on: Apr 26, 2012

Thank you to everyone who posted about Grandpa. It was nice to read everyone's comments. We will miss him a lot but will NEVER forget his personality and how he cared for us. We were blessed to be his family. He is with Grandma now, and we smile cause we all know how much he missed her. Take Care everyone and thanks again. - Posted by: Tobi Perepeluk (Granddaughter - Ron's daughter) on: Apr 26, 2012

In 1960, Walter and Amy gave Joyce Kerr and I a place to room and board with them. We became part of the Perepeluk family and would walk down the back lane to teach school. Many meals were shared and memories are recalled today. The Perepeluk home was warm and welsoming to us. I eventually married Bob Wolfenden and as single people we lived above Perps -Bob with his mother and I with the teachers. Sincere condolences to you Doug, Ron and Winnnifred(as we knew you!) - Posted by: Judie (Curran ) Wolfenden (Boarder, renter, teacher, etc) on: Apr 26, 2012

It was but a short time that I was in Lynn Lake and friend of Doug (Joe). Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this time of loss. From the obituary it sounds like Walt was quite the fellow. Chuck and Cheryl Morris - Posted by: Chuck Morris (Doug's Friend) on: Apr 24, 2012

Our family was very sorry to hear of Walt's passing. My in-laws, Bob and Rhoda were very close friends of the Perepeluk's in Lynn Lake. I only met Walt once when he came to visit the Burketts but I feel as if I knew him much better than that. The stories that were told about those days in the North were truly memorable and Walt was a big part of them. Our thoughts are with you, Winnie and family. My 1st job was at "Perps" in the 1950's and I worked there over several summers. Walt and I had a good chat when he attended the Lynn Lake reunion in Calgary. I'm sure there are many memories and stories to relate to his grandchildren. My condolences to the family on their loss. - Posted by: Claudia Gratton (Rawlings) () on: Apr 17, 2012

Our friend Walter couldn't understand why it took so long to learn how to play Bridge. A game he was so good at and could play with his eyes closed. Rest In Peace Walter. - Posted by: Elaine Brown (Budding bridge player at 360.) on: Apr 17, 2012

Mr. Perepeluk..... he was my friend's father and an employer to many in our family over the years (delivering groceries, working the candy counter, and those nasty store inventory days). Who would have thought such an idea of bringing boxes into the store for 5 cents a piece would fly! Guess where we spent the 5 cents? There was a wonderful tribute to Walter at the last Lynn Lake reunion in Calgary that really summed up his sense of community......lessons could be learned from this man. Mr. Perepeluk (is how I addressed him) will be remembered! Hugs and our deepest sympathies to you Winnie, Doug, Ron and your families. - Posted by: The Lysek and Erickson Families (friends) on: Apr 16, 2012

My grandparents lived upstairs in Perp's, as did we for a while. The Perepeluk family was an integral part of all of our lives in Lynn Lake. May the memories last forever. Karen, Fred, Ethel. - Posted by: Johnson and Didychuk families. () on: Apr 16, 2012

I was one of those kids who received a Penmanship Award and my first job was for Walter at "Perp's" in 1979. I have many fond memories of those days and all of the Perepeluk family. I learned many things while I worked at the store, especially the importance of doing your best and working hard. My condolences to your family. Keep the memories of your Dad close to your heart and they will help you through this difficult time. - Posted by: Janet (Boychuk) Steinthorson () on: Apr 16, 2012

Walter and Amy were great friends and neighbours to my parents Lloyd and Flo La-Roque who resided in South Osborne Place. Walter was also a very good friend to me when my Father passed away and always took the time to phone me to enquire about my Mother when she was in Riverview Health Centre for several years. He was a very special friend with a heart of gold who always helped out with car washes and special deliveries....he will be missed! With heartfelt condolences to the Family. Walter is almost synonymous with Lynn Lake. He was always a mover and shaker - helping out everyone he met, offering work to all the local teens, paying the little ones to return boxes, helping the local hockey and sports teams, taking time to be mayor because he was always trying to improve the town. Perp's Store stands empty now and people often mention the good times at Perp's Corner and how convenient it was to have Perp's Pantry open on weekends. He has been missed ever since he left Lynn Lake, but never forgotten. Our sincere sympathies to all the family. Walter was a very special person. Walter was the first person to come visit me (Abe) in the office of the L.G.D. when I started work as Administrator. I remember that well and appreciated it very much.
