NORA VERONIKA RIEGER 1914 - 2012 Peacefully, after a brief illness, Nora Veronika Rieger passed away on April 14, 2012, at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, at age 97. Nora was born in Steinbach, the fourth of six children of Sebastian and Eva Rieger. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Anna and Minna, and brothers Sebastian, Simon, and Henry. She is survived by nine nieces, three nephews and their families. Upon confession of her faith, she was baptized and received into membership at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church, now Cornerstone Bible Church, Steinbach. After high school, Nora took a business course and worked as a bookkeeper at Steinbach's C.T. Loewen firm and later in Winnipeg. At the sudden death of her father, she returned to Steinbach and was offered a clerical position at Bethesda Hospital. It was here she became interested in nursing, and, at age 40, entered nurses' training at Misericordia Hospital. She graduated in 1956, winning the prestigious Agnes Wilkie Memorial Award for general proficiency. Following graduation, Nora worked at Misericordia, attaining the positions of head nurse and nursing arts instructor. Once again returning to Steinbach to fulfill family commitments, Nora enjoyed gardening and travel while assisting with the immigration of relatives from war-torn Europe. Following the death of her mother, her adventurous spirit took her to Maryland to work with the MCC in a psychiatric facility. After five more years of nursing in California and Florida, she ended her career as the first Director of Nursing at the then newly built Personal Care Home in Steinbach. In retirement Nora enjoyed many volunteer positions in her church as well as the community. She served on the admissions committee of Fernwood Place, moving into the facility when Phase 2 was completed. She lived there until her death, enjoying the pleasant environment and making many friends. The family thanks Dr. W. Kaethler and the staff of Bethesda Hospital for their attentive care. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20, at Cornerstone Bible Church, 290 1st Street, Steinbach with viewing prior to the service. Interment at Heritage Cemetery. Arrangements by BIRCHWOOD FUNERAL CHAPEL 1-204-346-1030 OR 1-888-454-1030
