PERRY J.S. ROSS 1922 - 2012 Perry James Strathearn Ross passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, April 8, 2012, seven weeks before his 90th birthday. He was the only child of Gordon and Maud (Dimp) Ross. He attended Gordon Bell high School and enjoyed recalling the glory days when he was quarterback of the football team. Per's entire business career was spent in Winnipeg spanning some 45 years. In the early years, together with his father Grodon, he represented various companies as a manufacturer's agent. In the late 1950s they acquired the rights to represent a major fork lift manufacturer and that followed with the rights to handle additional related products. Ross Equipment Ltd. Was formed and continued as a successful sales and service organization until it was sold in 1988. The success of the business was based on service and integrity. Although devoted to his business, Perry discovered the joys of travel. His travel increased significantly after the sales of his business taking him the world over. He had great joy and satisfaction telling of his travels to China, Russia, Africa (paddling the Zambezi), the South Pacific, the Caribbean, numerous trips to Europe and renting homes in France and Italy with close friends as well as developing many friendships along the way. He was a lifelong friend of Glen Strathearn Harrison and Lawrie Reese Paxton and their families. In the early years he accompanied the Paxtons on numerous trips to Ponemah, Kenora and Clearwater Bay. In their youth Perry and Glen rode the freights from Winnipeg to Charlottetown and return. Later years found Perry and Glen sailing off the coast of Turkey and skiing together at Whistler many times. He was also a frequent guest on Bowyer Island, How Sound, BC, where the Harrisons and the Paxtons have adjacent summer cottages. Glen recalled that Perry was always so positive about life and was such an enthusiastic raconteur. When not working and travelling, his home of 50 years was his castle. Although a very modest home, he never tired of the river view from his living room window. He was an avid reader and kept himself in good physical condition jogging and walking in Assiniboine Park until his health no longer permitted it. At the age of 85 he was still skiing Whistler with his good friends in Vancouver. Perry valued his long time relationship with his professional advisors. He spoke highly of Fred Betton and John Nelson and commented many times of his good fortune to have and known and worked with them. He will be deeply missed by his close friends and neighbour Vivian and Tony MacDonald and Lynda Mohammed, his second cousin Carol Orr of Burnt River, Ontario, Glen, Lawrie and their families, Bill Scott and Shirley Harrison. A graveside service will take place at the St. James Cemetery on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 BROADWAY, WINNIPEG, MB R3C OX4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I grew up as a neighbour of Mr. Ross, and I was always in awe of the dapper man in his blue suit and fedora. My entire life, I have always enjoyed chatting with Mr. Ross, hearing amazing stories of his youth and his far off travels and adventures, and seeking his sage advice on many issues. He was always interesting, positive, warm and supportive, a true friend and a gentleman. In later years after I had moved away from Winnipeg, if I came back for a visit it always a given that I would pop by Mr. Ross’s house and have a chat, and I was always the better for it. He made a point to visit me too – once when Mr. Ross was visiting a friend in Paris, he found I was also in town and insisted I join them as their guest for a fabulous dinner at a fantastic restaurant – a real night to remember, and a testament to his generous, fun and steadfastly loyal nature. Even in the last few years, when his health was failing, his stellar character and innate charm never faltered. I’ll miss you terribly Mr. Ross, you were one of a kind. - Posted by: Tod Mohamed () on: Apr 24, 2012
