Betty was born at home in St. James and other than the years in nurses' training lived most of her life in the St. James area. She enrolled in nursing at the Grace Hospital in 1943 during the war years and graduated with the general proficiency award in 1946. In 1961 she went back to work full time as the head nurse to start the new ICU unit at the Grace and then moved as head nurse in ICU when the new hospital was built. After retiring from Grace she became Assistant Director of Nursing at Deer Lodge Hospital where she worked an additional five years before retiring in 1980. The funeral will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Avenue. A very special thank you to Dr. George and all the wonderful staff on 3 South at Grace. Their care and compassion was very much appreciated. Flowers are gratefully declined. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I remember well Mrs Orton's years in the Nursing Department at Deer Lodge for her dedication to the patients and her leadership for the nursing staff. My condolences to her family at this sad time. - Posted by: Edith Stephenson (EX Deer Lodge Hospital RN) on: May 08, 2012

  • Mrs. Orton (as we knew her) was a compassionate and understanding nurse and teacher. She respected each patient, and student, as she patiently led us all through our orientations and regular shifts in Grace Hospital ICU. Her example was an inspiration to me through all my nursing career. My condolences to her family. • I vividly recall the passion that Mrs. "O" had for life - for the people around her whether they were patients, staff or the visitors in DL. Being a young respiratory technologist in the late 70's, she was a great mentor, and guided the people around her in a kind and nurturing way. She led by example, but had so much fun doing it! "Life is what you make it"... was the motto she taught me, and her warm, caring hugs, smiles and sparkle in those eyes have never been forgotten! My sympathy to her family - it appears she has left a great legacy behind her! - Posted by: Lori Robinson Denbow (Deer Lodge Hospital Co - worker) on: Apr 28, 2012
