ROBERT JACK MATHES It is with great sorrow that the family of Robert Jack Mathes announces his sudden and unexpected passing due to complications following knee replacement surgery on Thursday, April 26, 2012. Robert is survived by his wife of 48 years, Gloria (Pierson) Mathes, children Michael (Cindy Berzuk), Kristen (Christopher Legrange), Kelly (Craig Blandford), Bryan (Malgorzata Rygiel) and sister Judy Smith (Curt). His grandchildren Alyssa, Mitchell, Mackenzie, Shawn, Andrew, Nicholas and Jillian will deeply miss their grandpa. Robert was born July 23, 1940 in Winnipeg to parents Jack and Frances (Raczka) Mathes. He grew up in West Kildonan delivering groceries and papers as a young boy in the neighborhood. Professionally, Robert was a salesman with unmatched ethics who spent many an hour driving his prairie territory serving his customers. Bob formed many fond friendships with customers and colleagues. He often reminisced about his experiences on the road with satisfaction and pride. Our fondest memories of our father and grandfather are with him at Lake Winnetka. Grandpa could often be found feeding the birds and squirrels while checking the temperature. He also fished and picked blueberries when taking breaks from his lake projects . He loved nothing better than being at the lake surrounded by his family taking great pride in creating an enduring environment that drew his children and grandchildren together each summer. He will always be remembered at Winnetka. In recent years Bob was a member and volunteer with the Local Colour Art Group where he channeled his love of painting and carving. Bob also loved following sports whether it was his grandchildren playing or the pros . He spent hours walking the family dogs in Bunn's Creek Park, tackling crosswords and cycling. Dad, you will always be in our thoughts. You were the best father and grandfather and we are all better for having you in our lives. We love you for all the things you did for us, little and big, and for making us who we are today. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Concordia General Hospital, I.C.U. and Unit 2W for all their care and compassion during this difficult time. Memorial Service will take place at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. 586-8044

  • It doesn't seem possible that Bob has left us. Bob gave me the courage and confidence to start my own business. That was the beginning of a wonderful 32 year friendship and ongoing business relationship. He was a steady rock in my life. An incredibly loyal, honest, trustworthy mentor. He made me laugh. He made me feel good to be around him. Bob was that very special person in my professional life. I owe a debt of gratitude to Bob. I have been truly blessed to know him. Goodbye my friend. • I will forever remember uncle Robert at the lake. I often envied the amount of time he was able to spend at the cabin puttering around. He had a love and passion towards his Cabin and family that was beautiful. There was always children and grandchildren there enjoying the fruits of his labour. My personal best memory was a few years ago when he called me and invited me out fishing in the fall, just him and I. We drove out together and chatted about life and his love of fishing. I remember it like it was yesterday. We spent the weekend fishing on lake of the woods and Winnetka. This memory will be how I remember him for the rest of my life. I still to this day am very thankful that I got to spend a weekend getting to know my uncle. I know he will be missed by his family deeply. - Posted by: Dave Gaudreau (Nephew) on: Apr 29, 2012
