MARY ELIZABETH MARTZ (nee VINCENT) 1927 - 2012 Finally at rest, Mary passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Deer Lodge Centre, at 84 years of age. She is survived by her children, Daryl (Pricilla), Deana (Jack), and Duane; her sisters Alice and June (Luigi); her brothers John and Lawrence (Carol); her grandchildren Tamara, Christopher (Cheryl), Sean, Samuel, and Steven; great-granddaughters Sydney and Savannah; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Hector and Edna Vincent, infant brother Hector, son Dale and beloved grandson, Charles. On her father's side, Mary was descended from H.B.C. Factor Thomas Vincent and his country wife Jane Renton; on her mother's side she was Irish. When Mary was a child, mixed bloods were not proud of their heritage but in 1997 Mary rejected that shame and joined the Manitoba Metis Federation. Growing up in the Victoria District during the Depression, Mary learned to make do and live simply. To help her mother, she stood on a stool to knead bread and was sent berry picking with instructions not to come home until her pail was full. It was not all hard work, though. She fondly remembered walking the prairies with her step-grandmother, Liza, who taught her the aboriginal names and uses of plants. There were family visits at Granny and Granddad Good's farm at SW 32-14-2E. With the Second World War, Mary's father joined the army and the family moved to Winnipeg to wait out the war. In 1947 she married a veteran and started her family. Mary longed to return to her prairie roots and realized that dream in the mid 1970s, first building a house out on the bog and then living in Stony Mountain until her parents passed away. By then, she was ready to return to Winnipeg, living first in a condo and then at Fred Douglas Place on Vaughan Street where she enjoyed being in the midst of a busy downtown. Wherever she lived though, she had a patio where she could drink her morning coffee and feel the sun and breeze. One of her last wishes was to live until spring so she could once again be outside in the sun. We are so happy that wish was granted. Feisty is the word usually used to describe Mary. She was proud, resourceful and determined. As she aged, she became even more fierce, fiery and opinionated. She was like tough prairie sod with deep roots and her face to the sun. Rev. S. Sharman conducted the funeral service at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 3 at Mackenzie Funeral Service Chapel, 433 Main Street, Stonewall. Interment followed at All Saints Victoria Cemetery. The family acknowledges the love and devotion showered on Mary by Alice's children, in particular, Leeanne, her husband Larry and their daughter Sarah. We wish to thank the staff of 4E at Deer Lodge for their compassionate care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Mary's memory to the Maintenance Fund, All Saint's Victoria Anglican Church. Completed in 1877, this Manitoba Provincial Historic Site was built on land donated by Mary's great-grandfather, John Vincent. Donations may be sent c/o Church of the Ascension, Box 550, Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0. MACKENZIE FUNERAL CHAPEL STONEWALL (204) 467-2525 mackhome@mts.net

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My condolences to ALL family members. It would be hard NOT to remember Mary with a warm heart. Feisty and opinionated she certainly was. She was a strong woman, but she also had a soft side as I found out. • At Deanna and Jack's wedding, I was drawn to this fabulous looking lady, tall strong beautiful and looking so very sure who she was..I had to meet her and I did. We talked and I did not want the conversation to end. She was from the same culture as me. I am so very proud of her for recognizing who she was and like I. Just that small visit gave me the strength to go forward with my life and to be proud of who I really am. I thank you so very much and I will always be ever grateful to you.
