BERNICE ALICE WATTS (nee JOHNSON) June 7, 1929 - April 28, 2012 At home on April 28, 2012, Bernice passed away at the age of 82. We are left with a huge hole in our hearts for she was a great and gentle soul who loved everyone she met. For Jack, her husband of 57 years, Bernice was everything. She was his best friend, soul mate, confidante and partner in living. Together they made their home full of laughter, song, friendship, and love, open to everyone, welcoming all. Her sister Arlie was her lifelong friend. They conversed daily about their lives. She meant everything to Arlie and they enjoyed a close and loving relationship. Her children Lauren (Eric), Jeffrey (Jackie), and Allyson (Lee) were her love and joy. She was mentor, inspiration, listener, gentle, kind, thoughtful, and understanding. Mom saw the best in everyone, did for others from the goodness of her heart, and was an example of how to live life to the fullest with strength and faith. Her grandchildren Christopher (Jana), David (Tanya), Danielle (Jake), Jonathan (Juli), James and great-grandson Ethan were the light of her life. Her face lit up upon mention of their name(s) or their presence. Prior to her death she was overjoyed to hear she was to become Great-Grandmother twice more in 2012. Bernice was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba to Olie and Margaret Johnson. She was the first of two daughters. As a young girl, the family moved to various towns in Manitoba (Minitonas, Kenville, Gilbert Plains) as her father was a C.N.R. Station Agent. Bernice moved to Brandon to attend college for a year before moving to Winnipeg in 1949. She was employed by the Bank of Nova Scotia until the birth of her first child. Jack and Bernice knew each other as children and re-met in Winnipeg in 1949. They married on August 21, 1954 at St. Stephen's Broadway United Church (Broadway Disciples United Church) where they are still members. Once the children were in school Mom took part time work at the City of Winnipeg Library Department (Westwood Library - Boys and Girls Department) where she remained until her retirement. Mom loved her bridge. She belonged to a bridge club for many years. She was also a steadfast member of the United Church Women. Other interests included walking, reading and art. Bernice was courageous in the face of tremendous health challenges. Those challenges did not stop her from living every day to the fullest. Bernice is now at peace. No more pain. No more medication. Rest well, dear one. We love you so much. We hope you are enjoying bridge with your Mom and Dad, and have found a fourth. We look forward to seeing you again in time. Well done, good and faithful servant. Matthew 25:21 After a private family interment, a Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday, May 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Broadway Disciples United Church, 396 Broadway, The Rev. Dr. Raymond A. Cuthbert officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715
