MARIA THIESSEN Oma was cradled in the loving arms of her family as she passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus, late in the afternoon of Sunday, April 29, 2012. Maria will be sadly missed by her three sons Cornelius, John (Deb), Carl (Sherry), her two daughters Anne Sigurdson (Gord) and Helene Thys (Willis); her 23 grandchildren - Darrien (Alicia), Brianne, Tyler (Sherry), Corinne (Rob), Matt, Ben (Sylvie), Caroline, Sean (Brenda), Heather (Tim), Ryan (Martha), Ken, Eric (Kalyn), Kris (Tomke), Jessica (Jeremy), Dayle (Jen), Michael (Monika), Christina (Jay), Dustin, Megan (Dana), Robyn, Tom, Dylan (Ashley), Harley (Nikki), and 11 great-grandchildren William, Tessa, Amelia, Skye, Ethan, Matteus, Silas, Mika, Anara, Ella, Ben. Missing her also is son-in-law Erny Braun (Heather) and daughter-in-law Collette. Maria will also be missed by her sister Helene Loewen and her sister-in-law Susanna Buhler and their families. Maria was predeceased by husband Franz in 1987, by daughters Gretel in 1960 and Mary Braun in 1991, and son Frank in 2006. Maria was born on November 28, 1923 in Neuendorf, Ukraine. Mom was a survivor. Her life journey crossed into four countries: USSR, Germany, Paraguay and finally Canada where she and Franz raised a large and happy family. Mom was always so grateful for the wonderful richness and opportunities that Canada offered. Thanks Mom, for getting us out of Paraguay! In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Mennonite Central Committee. Our family was helped by the MCC many times; diapers in Germany, care packages in Paraguay and into the early Canadian days. With gratitude and because it was so wichtig to Mom, she and the Frauen Verein sewed hundreds of blankets to send comfort to people in need. Mom would want us to thank her doctors Duerksen, Homick and Harris, her Home Care workers, and the staff at Concordia Hospital. She very much appreciated their support, comfort and compassion, as we all did, especially over the difficult past two years. A celebration of her life will be held at the North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch Street at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2012 with viewing prior to service. Interment to follow at Brookside.

So good to hear of relatives following the Lord. My mother was a Buhler. She came to Canada in 1927. I'm related to Buhler Industries people. (I'm into genealogy.) I am retired and have worked in missions in India for many years. God bless. John - Posted by: John Pauls (4th cousin) on: May 06, 2012

Dear family of Maria Thiessen. Our sincere condolences in the loss of your Mother, Oma and... We remember when your family came to Canada, experiencing joys and sorrows as they got used to a new way of life. And your Mother, Oma always had a soft smile on her face. What a blessing! Oma was the beloved grandmother of my nieces Megan and Robyn and my nephew Tom. She was also the mother of one of the best freinds I ever had. I met her once but knew her well through the experiences of others. She was a wonderful woman who will be missed sorely by many. The world is a diminished place now. Rest in peace Oma. - Posted by: John Bock () on: May 01, 2012

I was sorry to hear of Mrs. Thiessen's passing today. I enjoyed visiting her as a home care worker. She was always friendly even when she was not feeling well. I will miss her. Psalms 23. - Posted by: Sharon Lepp (Home Care) on: May 01, 2012
