MURRAY GARNET EASTOE April 23, 1953 - May 4, 2012 Murray Eastoe passed away peacefully at Health Sciences Centre with his family by his side on May 4, 2012. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 34 years, Donna (nee Rose), son Kevin, and Kevin's girlfriend, Lynnsey Reich, sister Irene Houssin, nephews Mike Houssin (Jennifer) and Doug Houssin (Stephanie), mother-in-law Hazel Rose, sister-in-law Karen Benham, niece Andrea Malinowski, brother-in-law Dale Rose, sister-in-law Diniece Rose, nephews Phillip and Bradley Rose, and many cousins. He will be greatly missed by all. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Bob and Dorothy Eastoe, and his father-in-law, Wes Rose. Murray was born and raised in Winnipeg. He attended Lord Selkirk Elementary School, David Thompson Junior High School, and Elmwood High School. He enjoyed many sports including baseball and hockey and played percussion in the Elmwood High School Band. As a teenager he worked at Cox's Bakery and Hotel Fort Garry. He went on to work for MTS and then attended Red River College getting an electronic technician diploma after which he worked for Cablevision for a few years. His dream career was offered to him in 1977, when he joined the Winnipeg Fire Department and he enjoyed firefighting for 30 years. He met Donna in 1976, and they married on May 6, 1978. They were devoted to each other. In 1982, their son Kevin was born and Murray was a wonderful father to him. Murray had a love of life and he shared this with his family and many friends. He was generous and kind, enthusiastic, humorous and fun loving. He lived his life to the fullest and he helped many. His top priority was always his family. His hobbies were fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, bicycling, camping, playing cards, small engine repair, computers, tinkering (Mr. Fix-It), yard work, cooking, paying attention to his cat Arnold, watching the Blue Bombers and the Jets, going on driving holidays, and entertaining. He and Donna travelled together to many destinations across Canada, United States, Mexico and the Caribbean, the most recent being a driving trip to Little Rock, Arkansas and to Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Murray took on his biggest life challenge in March 2008, when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He had various treatments including a stem cell transplant in March 2010. He did all of this with great courage and determination. His most recent challenge with multiple myeloma occurred suddenly and he soldiered on courageously right to the last breath. The family would like to thank Dr. Brent Kvern, Dr. Peter Nemeth, Dr. David Szwajcer, Dr. Vi Dao, Dr. Ade Olujohungbe, Dr. Rizwan Qureshi, CancerCare treatment room nurses, Tom Roche, all CancerCare Manitoba staff, Health Sciences Centre Emergency staff, Dr. Barry Cohen, Dr. Anthony Battad, and the wonderful staff of GH7 at Health Sciences Centre. He received excellent care throughout his illness. We would also like to thank our family and friends for their loving support throughout this battle with cancer. Condolences & Memories (32 entries)

  • I met Murray in David Thompson Junior High School band and then we carried on to the Elmwood High School band. He was at my right side playing Tympani while I played snare drum. We fished and hunted many times together and also hung out for a few beers on occasion. I am saddened by his passing but only found out about this a week ago. He was a great guy. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Dave Dutchyn (Friend) on: Jun 05, 2016

A kind and helpful person, that I am proud to say was one my best childhood friends. - Posted by: Larry Dziedzic ((Childhood Friend)) on: May 10, 2012

  • I'm so shocked to have read this today. My heart goes out to you Donna & Kevin; I use to see you & Murray walking often & then there were the times when our kids were in school we talked. I remember helping Murray one time when he called into HC about his mother & meds. I suggested to use Leila Pharmacy & there was a time after that I spoke to him & he mentioned it was helpful. I feel honored that I had brief contact with Murray & know you have lost a dear, kind friend, husband, father & person to a better place with God. I'm glad you have good friends & family to support you Donna & Kevin. Take care. God Bless You & assist you at this difficult time. • I've met Murray many times over the years, I married Judy Steffensen who was the Eastoe's next door neighbor for many years. Murray's dad treated me very well and assisted me greatly during the beginning of my career, the first time we met I was immediately struck with how kind, generous and caring the entire Eastoe clan was. I consider myself very lucky for having married into this extended family...how lucky can one man be! Not surprising Murray joined the fire department, saving lives and property while risking his life is what great men do. We are lucky to have had him watching over our families at night. The Ridley family will miss you Murray, thanks for everything you have done for me. I am honoured to have met you. - Posted by: Charles Ridley (Family friend) on: May 08, 2012

  • I was shocked and saddened when I heard about Murray's passing. I worked and have known Murray for over 30 years. I'll miss those lunches we used to have to catch up on news from the job and other things. My deepest sympathy to his wife Donna, his son Kevin and to all his family. Someone once said that if you have just one friend, you're a rich man. Murray was a wealthy man and he enriched my life and so many others. One of my favorite passages in the Bible says "That to be absent from the body is to be with the Lord". Murray's in good hands now.
