ORVAL MATHEWS Peacefully with family by his side on May 5, 2012 at the E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital in Eriksdale, MB, Orval Mathews, our husband, Dad, Afi and Lang Afi, passed away at the age of 81. Orval was born on November 18, 1930 in Winnipeg to Otto and Emily Mathews. He resided his entire life in Oak Point. Orval was first and foremost a fisherman all his life. He held various jobs throughout his life. He was a Conservation Officer, a carpenter with the Northern Stores, a mink rancher and he retired from Whitehorse Plains School Division as a Utility person. Orval enjoyed many hobbies. After retiring he was well known for his garden. He loved to fish, go camping with the grandkids, show the grandkids how to nail a board, watch the grandkids play sports and take care of Lynn's horses. He was also famous for inventing, modifying and making whatever was needed. After retiring he loved commandeering the shopping cart and the TV remote and attending the Thoroughbred Yearling Horse Sale. Orval had a great sense of humour, loved a good laugh and spending time with the many friends who stopped in for coffee. He is survived by his wife Carol, of 58 years, his son Lynn (Vivian), daughter Lorna (Tom), son Glen (Kim), five grandsons, Colin (Chelsey), Miles and Cameron Johnson, Patrik and Kris Mathews, two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Halle, his brother Marvin and sister Eleanor, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Rosina and Roy Wert, his sister and brother-in-law Evangeline and George Sereda, niece Debbie, sister-in-law and brother-in-law June and Alex Fortin. In keeping with Orval's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family graveside service will be held at the Oak Point Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care received and the many kindnesses shown the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the E.M. Crowe Memorial Hospital Guild, c/o Irene Sigurdson, Box 474, Eriksdale, MB R0C 0W0 or CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or a charity of your choice. • To my aunt Carol and cousins Lynn, Lorna, and Glen: I would like to express my heartfelt condolences for your loss. I have fond memories of uncle Orval. What a kind and great person! I will always remember the happiness and love in your home, the few times I had the opportunity to visit over the years. I remember the mink farm (and the 'stinky mink feed'), and childhood Summer days of roaming around Oak Point and Lake Manitoba with Lynn and my older brother Grant when we were kids! I remember Lorna and Glen as well, and aunt Carol - always such a wonderful person! - Orval had the kind of smile that one could never forget! I love you all, and hope you are all doing well! Special thoughts are in my heart for you all! Yours Truly, with love... Mathew Fines - Posted by: Mathew Craig Fines (nephew) on: May 17, 2012

  • We will miss Orval at the lake and the curling rink. Orval loved the horses as we do and we shared a few racing stories. We admire Orval for his hard work and dedication to his wonderful family. We hope the many happy memories you have of Orval will comfort you at this difficult time. Oak Point will just not be the same without him. Sincere sympathy and remember our thoughts are with you.
